🇻🇳 Merry Christmas from Vũng Tàu, Vietnam 🇻🇳

Merry Christmas to one and all.

If anyone wants me, I’ll be at the hotel beach club 🏖️

reply

I assume there aren't many Christmas decorations up.

reply

There’s a massive Christmas tree in the lobby and a few bits and pieces around the hotel.

The shops have got a smattering of Christmasy stuff and are selling decorations.

Christmas isn’t a thing in SE Asia, but they make a bit of an effort for us farangs, barangs and bules.

reply

it's big in the philippines.

reply

It’s virtually the 51st State of America.

reply

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

reply

Thank you and to you.

reply

Since you're over there now, can you tell me from what you see, was the Vietnam War worth it? Was what they have now worth over a million lives to try and prevent?

Caveat No.1 - I don’t do politics.
Caveat No.2 - I’ve only been here twice, the last time was 30 years ago.

From a tourist’s point of view, Vietnam is a fairly clean, safe and welcoming country. The infrastructure is miles ahead of Cambodia and less frenetic than Indonesia or the Philippines and is probably on par with Thailand.

The people are fairly laid back and hospitable and I would recommend it as a holiday destination (but always do your research first).

The Vietnam war started before I was born, so it’s difficult for me to form a strong opinion on the whys and wherefores. From what I can gather, it appears that the US adopted the wrong tactics and could have brought the conflict to a close fairly quickly if they had taken advantage of their aerial superiority. But the beauty of hindsight is always 20/20, eh?

reply

It's not a matter of politics. I just think it's sad that so many died and so much money was spent by the American government to stop you from having two nice holidays in Vietnam. I guess those commies weren't so bad after all?

It's a lesson we can learn going forward. We should have known that before we lost two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ... And while we're fueling that war right now in Ukraine.

reply

I don’t know how different it would be here today if the war had gone the other way.

There’s plenty of neon lights everywhere and it seems fairly westernised.

reply

Lol. It would probably be the same whether we lost or won the war. The whole thing was such a waste.

reply

I went to the Remnants War Museum and it was pretty harrowing.

I forgot to mention that they have McDonalds over here, which is hardly the best sign of Communism, lol.

👍

Merry Beach Christmas.

reply

Thanks - I left my home by the beach to have a holiday by the beach, lol.
