What did you burrito jumpers watch this week? (11/19-11/25)

What a week guys! WHAT. A. WEEK!!!

The war (1994 DVD): “A Vietnam veteran helps his kids battle over a tree house while recovering from his traumatic war experience.” Great film but not an easy watch! It’s powerful, sad and long. It was my first time seeing it since the 90’s and I remembered most of it. Such an impactful film that will probably leave its mark in my kids too. My rating: 8/10

Pawn sacrifice (2014 DVD): Chess is one of my favourite games so when I saw that movie for five dollars I had to get it. I found that it somehow lacked rhythm and thrills cinematically wise but the true story is an amazing one. Actors did a good job too. My rating: 7/10

DC league of super-pets (2022 DVD): Saw this at the theatre with my oldest son and now we bought the DVD because we really wanted his younger brother and sister to see it too. A must have for the kids collection. My rating: 8/10

Deathgasm (Friday night special): This movie cracked me up a few times and that’s a feat in itself. Plus the gore was awesome and although not a fan of the genre, the Metal aspect was very well used. This movie destroyed some serious Anal Cunts. My only complaint is about missing some of the dialogues because of the accent/bad audio combination. If I was into metal I might have rated this 10/10, idk. My rating: 8/10

Eat brains love ( Friday late night special): The quality of this production exceeded my expectations. The acting was rather bad at first but it did get better as it went. A solid addition to the zombie genre. My main complaint is about a MAJOR plot hole: The girl kept her braw during sex scene. Wait, that’s not all. A few minutes later the dude takes the braw out of his pockets. She never took the braw off!! Why didn’t she take the braw off??? 😡 My rating: 7/10

Smile (Saturday night special): I don’t know what was scarier about this film; the sights or the sounds. Because as creepy or gore as the sights could get, the sounds were scary as fuck! With a solid cast, a reasonably good story (I do wonder what would’ve happened if one of them would just suicide all alone in a room with no one to witness ? 🤔) and nice camera works, this new addition to the genre was a success. At least for me! Only thing that disappointed me was the final scene which offers no kind of resolve. My rating: 7/10

Better watch out (Saturday late night special): My first rewatch. It obviously lost some of its novelty and originality knowing what would happen but still had a good time with it. A whole lot of fun for the entire Movie Club. My rating: 7.5/10

My Rating System:
10: Perfect/Favourite

9.5: Near perfect Masterpiece
9: Absolutely Outstanding
8.5: Most Excellent

8: Great

7.5: Very good
7: Good

Hello!

Better Watch Out 7/10

My Week: (a lot of Christmas movies again)

Once Upon a Christmas Miracle (2018) 7/10
I usually avoid based on true story movies, but this is one I actually like. I watched it when it came out and wanted something that actually made me like human beings so I watched it again today. Too many Hallmark movies can be a bad thing. Aside from the recovery time being super quick, I enjoy the story. I like that the people who the story is based on have cameos, and that the story is somewhat close to what happened.

Christmas by Starlight (2020) 7/10
I'm a sucker for Kimberley Sustad Christmas movies. Even though this one is a paint by numbers one, she and Paul Campbell just bump up my enjoyment.

A Merry Scottish Christmas (2023) 7/10
I liked this one for the most part. It was nice to see Lacey and Scott acting as brother and sister again. Maybe it's because I've seen her in too many Hallmark movies, but I just didn't buy her as a doctor. Liked that it mostly focused on the family, and not romance.

Navigating Christmas (2023) 5.5/10
Cookie cutter plot, but it had a few fun moments. I also just don't really care for Chelsea Hobbs as a lead. Not the worst I've seen this year though.

Hallway (2015) 5/10
Liked the aesthetic, but I couldn't really follow the dialogue so that lost me.

This Is the Night (1932) 5/10
I guess even pre-code comedy isn't for me. There were some cute moments, but I felt that most of the comedy fell flat. That's probably just preference. It was fun to see Cary Grant so young.

Five More Minutes (2021) 7/10
I stand by my last review. It's a decent movie for one based off of a country song. Still wanted more old grandpa, but this will stay on my rewatch list.

X (2022) 9/10
Wanted to watch this again after watching Pearl. It had been long enough since I last watched it that there was a lot about it that I didn't remember. I think I enjoyed it even more this time around knowing more about Pearl's backstory. Fantastic movie that I know I'll be watching again, and again.

The Nine Lives of Christmas (2014) 9/10
Probably my favourite of the Christmas Hallmark style movies. I watch it every year now.

The Nine Kittens of Christmas (2021) 8/10
Didn't review this one this time around.

Eat Brains Love (2019) 6.5/10
Wasn't expecting much with this one. I liked it a lot better than I thought I would. It did remind me of many other movies, but I think in quality I'd put it on par with Ahhhh Zombies. Like that one, I thought the premise was good, but I did lose interest after awhile.

Everything Christmas (2023) 7/10
So ignoring the potentially creepy aspects of Santa, and just going with the magic of the Christmas season, I thought this was a cute film. There were some silly happenstances, but this is a Hallmark film about the magic of Christmas. Slightly different than other stories, and it didn't feel as paint by number as others. It may go on my rewatch list.

It’s a little bit funny how you can enjoy so much horror and Halloween stuff and also watch cheesy hallmark flick like these.

You have the Ying AND the Yang.

I got a scoop for you: I’m thinking of Santa’s slay for next weekend. Should I put it as a Late night feature?

reply

I won't be able to make any of the watch parties for the next 3 weeks. If I can't take part, I can't, but I won't be able to point me out. Lol....

Not sure I'd do that anyways.

reply

Oh yes, that’s right! Nah, winter’s long enough, we can watch it in January

reply

THREE WEEKS.😢😭

reply

I know. But for the first time since 2019 we have a Christmas Panto happening at the theatre. That makes me really happy.

reply

I HAD TO GOOGLE PANTO...LOL...FINE...I GET IT...I HOPE IT GOES AMAZING...HAVE A TON OF FUN...AND THEN COME BACK...WE WILL MISS YOU A LOT.

reply

Pantos are so much fun.

I will miss you too. I just watched Deathgasm, and I think it would have been a lot more fun with all of you.

reply

Also, I don’t remember seeing your review of Pearl. Do you have it saved somewhere? Or what was your rating?

I hope to be able to appreciate X a bit more after seeing Pearl. I bought it recently.

reply

I watched it back in May. This is what I said about it.(not much it seems)

Pearl (2022) 8/10
My first impression of this was how gorgeous this film looked. While it didn't grab my attention in the same way X did, I still really enjoyed it. Mia Goth was great.

A Christmas Switch (2018) 7/10
If you haven't seen it, I really liked this one.

A week indeed! Quite a good one actually.

Deathgasm (Friday night special): Pretty good movie with solid performances from the cast. A very creative way to tell a story using limited locations and, from what I’m assuming, a pretty low budget. I might have liked it even more 25 years ago when I was still into metal. 7/10.

Eat Brains Love (Friday late-night special): Solid movie with a very entertaining story. The actors hammed up their performances, but I believe they were directed to do so—at least that's the impression I got—as they were all acting like they knew they were in a “bad” movie. It probably would've been better had they played it straight. Regardless, still a good movie. 7/10.

Smile (Saturday night special): I really liked this one a lot. A very creepy story about unresolved trauma and how society forces sufferers to wear a “smile” as a mask for acceptance, highlighting how ineffective and isolating that can be. Sosie Bacon was great in it. There may be an over-reliance on jump-scares, and the ending was somewhat ambiguous, possibly setting up a sequel. I need to watch it again to fully analyze and write a full review, but for now, it’s a very solid 7/10.

Better Watch Out (Saturday late-night special): Pretty good little film. Great acting, especially from Luke and Ashley. The story started getting a little repetitive as the film went on, but it was still enjoyable. 7/10 for Better Watch Out.

Side Note: Every film from this MCMC was a 7/10. That’s pretty cool.

I went on a Scream binge:

Scream (1996) – The original and best. I loved this movie when it was new and appreciate it even more all these years later. What’s incredibly apparent upon rewatching it is how influential it has been on the slasher genre. 8.5 out of 10

Scream 2 (1997) – Really great sequel that’s almost as good as the original. I really loved watching all the character arcs. 7.5/10

Scream 3 (2000) - Undid Dewey and Gale’s character arcs from the previous film, which made no sense. I’m giving it a 6, but that almost feels too high. 6/10

Scream 4 (2011) – This was my fist time watching this reunion film. It was great to see all the characters back together, but something about the film just didn’t totally work. 6/10

Scream V (2022) – Meh…They did Dewey like Luke and you knew he was dead the second they cut to the exterior shot of the trailer park. What they did with his and Gale’s characters after Scream 2 doesn’t seem to make sense. 5.5/10

Scream VI (2023) – This was pretty good, but it was painfully obvious who the killers were for reasons I won’t go into, and the story was a little too far fetched, even for this franchise. Regardless it’s the best Scream film since the second one. 7/10

I was already bingeing the Scream movies when the news about Barrera and Ortega dropped. It will be interesting to see where they go with Scream 7.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Napoleon (2023) – I have a full review posted on the movie’s forum but the TL;DR is:

I went in wanting and expecting to like it but came out thinking it was a disjointed mess. Despite the visually impressive battle scenes and the strength of its two leads, Napoleon is a jumbled mess of a story that borders on the incoherent.
6.5/10.

30 Coins (2020-Present)

Bloodshot77 recommended this on the General Discussion boards last week and I started watching it and got hooked right away.

30 Coins is an enthralling Spanish mystery horror series created by Álex de la Iglesia for HBO Europe. The series follows Father Vergara, an exiled priest and former boxer, trying to escape his mysterious past by living as a recluse in the remote, rural village of Pedraza, Spain. Despite his best efforts, Vergara’s former life refuses to remain buried, as old enemies come back to haunt him. As horrifying murder and supernatural mayhem consume the village, Vergara forms an unlikely alliance with the towns Mayor and the local veterinarian. The trio soon uncover the malevolent force behind the horrific chaos: an ancient religious cult, hell-bent on reclaiming the infamous 30 Coins paid to Judas Iscariot for betraying Jesus to the Romans.

The first two episodes launch the series with a chilling exorcist-style horror-story of demonic possession; however, the show soon broadens its horizons, lurking into the murder-mystery genre with episodes that smack of the The X-Files. Several episodes later in the season even venture into globe trotting, Indiana Jones-style searches for ancient relics in far-off lands.

As typical with many shows out of Spain, the show ventures into soapy-telenovela love drama, and in this case, it’s highly-effective; I actually found myself drawn into the will-they-or-won’t-they subplot that pulsated throughout the season.

Yet, despite its forays across genres, 30 Coins never loosens its grip on the unrelenting horror and menacing tone, maintaining an undercurrent of supernatural malevolence as sinister as it is unsettling.

Eduard Fernández delivers a powerful performance as the tormented boxing priest Father Vergara, while Megan Montaner brings a compelling mix of strength and vulnerability to her portrayal of Elena. Miguel Ángel Silvestre lends a Clark Kent-esque charm to the village's reluctant mayor, his performance underscored by a palpable sense of uncertainty.

Álex de la Iglesia's direction, paired with the evocative cinematography of the small, rural village that dates back to medieval times creates an eerie and ominous atmosphere, seeing the village itself emerge as a character steeped in secrets.

Paul Giamatti joins the cast for Season 2 which is currently releasing new episodes weekly on MAX.

TL;DR I will watch anything with Megan Montaner 😍

30 Coins: Season 1 gets an 8 out of 10

Termination Point (2007) - Oh how the mighty have fallen. Jason Priestly and Lou Diamond Phillips paying the bills in this low budget Sci-fi film - 3/10.

Marvels (2023) - Took my daughter to see it. It was ok, but definitely one of the lesser well made comic book movies - 6.5/10

The Prisoner (1967) - Cerebral British Spy/Sci-fi/Fantasy TV series. I haven’t seen this since I was a child and it didn’t disappoint. What made it even better for me is that a couple of years ago I visited ‘The Village’ in North Wales, so I recognised all the shots - 9/10.

I USED TO HAVE TERMINATION POINT ON DVD...IT DID NOT MAKE THE COLLECTION CUT UPON VIEWING...IT WAS WOW BAD!

Foe (2023) - a very strange AI movie where a woman falls in love with her AI replacement. the sex seemed to be better. not sure what the point was and why i stuck with it. 5/10

Reptile (2023) - i wanted to like this but it is replete with plot holes, stupid actions and incompletions. del toro was good. timberlake is sleepwalking through a small role. 5.5/10

The Creator (2023) - another action AI movie. started well and then they rushed it and brought in the moon thing put of nowhere. how many bombs can washington take for his career to end. 6/10

reply

I was thinking of Reptile for the MovieClub. Probably not the best idea.

It's A Wonderful Knife (2023) 6.5/10 I'm really liking this murder mystery comedy genre that's come out, But this wasn't as good as Totally Killer (2023).

A Haunting in Venice 2023 5/10 I love Agatha Christie but these new ones are really boring.

Family Switch 2023 Jennifer Garner 6.5/10 There is nothing new here but For what it was I enjoyed it.

The Blackening 2023 6.5/10 This wasn't bad, but I think it needed a stronger mystery, more about the characters, instead of just jokes. There were some funny moments, and a few actually really funny moments, but the plot was weak.
