What did you watch this week pumpkin? (10/08-10/14) 🎃

Yo, drop whatever you’re doing, we got more important matter at hand!

My week:

The land before time: The secret of Saurus Rock (1998 DVD): The 6th entry in this super mega franchise is not amongst the most memorable and outstanding but it’s fun, cute and thrilling enough. My rating: 7.5/10

De l'autre côté du périph (On the Other Side of the Tracks 2012 TV): almost halfway in I realised my wife and I had seen the sequel to this last year (The Takedown) and we hadn’t liked it much and this original wasn’t better. You can’t rely on Omar Sy’s charisma (big as it may be) only to make a good film. This is a forgettable cinema. My rating: 4.5/10

Candy land (Friday night special): A nice little Christmas movie this was. If you go to that town’s mall, Santa Claus is black. I mean, ain’t nothing wrong with that. Seriously, though this movie was of pretty good quality and the actresses were all good. I found that the horror aspect lacked a certain something to make the story more gripping and effective but overall, a decent low-budget effort. My rating: 6/10

Porno (Friday late night special): Fell asleep half way through and finished it the next days. This one also has a fairly good cast but the execution was a bit weaker. A few good moments (that shoe laced ball sack was quite funny) some fun dialogues but that’s about it. It didn’t make much sense overall. My rating: 5/10

House (Saturday night special): This has all the ingredients of a good 80s horror comedy plus we get a cool war story in bonus. Very nice. My rating: 7.5/10

(I watched about half an hour of Donnie Darko and although it’s s a pretty cool movie I didn’t feel like continuing it and preferred watching the MTL hockey game.)

Slasher Season 1 (Netflix): I started this Canadian series a few years back but never got back to it. I had planned to though. So I finally did this week and it has a solid enough story, sparse but good kills, nice cinematography but it’s the acting that hurts. It was pretty weak except for 4 characters. The worst was the lead actress. She sucked pretty bad. Also, the intro is a crappy attempt to copy AHS. The first episode takes place at Halloween and the last too so that was cool. Like I said, the story kept me involved but is nothing we haven’t seen before: “Shortly after her return to the small town where her parents were murdered many years ago, Sarah Bennett is horrified when she discovers a new series of murders has begun.” Then we get good characters and bad characters and discover through the episodes that finally, all of them are hiding dark secrets. By the time we get to the last two episodes, there is literally one character left who still have good motives and no dark secrets revealed so it obviously pointed directly to him to be the killer. It did make sense with the story but I found it was the easy way out and pissed me off a little. Earlier in the season I did think to myself “man I hope he ain’t the killer, that would suck. My rating: 6.5/10

Fun facts:

-Slasher and Candy Land had religious murders and Porno had religious murdered.
-candy land and Porno’s connections: same length, start with sex scene, take place in the 90’s, full frontal scene.

My Rating System:
10: Perfect/favourite

9.5: Near perfect Masterpiece
9: Absolutely Outstanding
8.5: Most Excellent

8: Great

7.5: Very good
7: Good

6.5: Pretty good

6: Just Fine

5.5: Average

5: Below average
4.5: Mediocre
4: Bad
3: Very bad
2: Pure rubbish

1: Dreadfully Abysmal and insulting/Not even worth watching

Pumpkin here!

Candy land 5/10
Porno 7/10
House 8/10

I watched:

Light in the Piazza 1962 7/10 This is a beautiful looking film. I really liked the cinematography and the lovely scenery. The costumes are great too. Olivia de Havilland does a good job as the concerned mother trying to determine what's best for her daughter. Yvette Mimieux is charming and effective as the childlike young woman. Some of the story elements don't completely work though.

3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost 2023 8/10 I enjoyed this. It was cute and charming.

Five Dolls for an August Moon 1970 6/10 This was just okay.

Island of the Fishmen 1979 6/10 Some fun moments and I liked the look of the creatures.

Friday the 13th Part III 1982 (rewatch) 7/10 Not the best in the series, but not the worst. Some fun moments.

Candy Land 2022 5/10 Uneven and never quite lands the right tone. Some good moments, but ultimately unsatisfying.

Strip Nude for Your Killer 1975 7/10 (rewatch) Sexy fun.

House 1985 (rewatch) 8/10 Entertaining and fun.

Review of Porno please?

reply

I watched it once in 2020 and never wrote a review. I remember liking it for the most part, but not being blown away. I imagine my review would have been something like: This was reasonably entertaining with some fun moments, but could have been better overall.

reply

Aww ok right, you didn’t watch it this week. I get it now… move along.

reply

I might have seen Friday the 13th Part III but don’t remember it.

This week I watched:

The French Connection (1971) - My first watch. Another one that has been on my watch list for ages. Amazing film. One of the best thrillers I've ever seen. The performances are great, it's so well written & I love the score. 8.5/10

The French Connection 2 (1975) - A step down really. Not quite thrilling. Didn't care for most of the characters. Gene Hackman is the best thing about the movie. I did love the final chase though. 6.5/10

reply

I need to watch that movie too bro.

reply

I'd recommend the first one the most. Sequel ain't bad but it never reaches the heights of the first one's William Friedkin - Gene Hackman - Roy Schieder combination.

Shame that Hackman was the only one who returned for the sequel.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick (2023) - 7/10
Saw X (2023) - 7/10
Talk to Me (2022) - 8/10
Blind Alley (2011) - 5/10
The Clinic (2010) - 5/10
Dog Soldiers (2002) - 8/10 (Rewatch)
Cure (1997) - 9/10
Voices from Beyond (1991) - 6/10

And out of the ones you watched I've seen

House - 6/10

reply

Your first 3 entrees are on my list and will have to add Dog soldiers and Cure. Cure I will buy if I find it for a reasonable price. Looks like it’s my kind of shit.

reply

Oh how lovely to join the pumpkin patch!

Candy Land (2021) - I appreciate this movie for being able to get made under a lot of awkward constraints. The story gets a bit wonky towards the end, but it's an altogether solid ride... kind of like a pretty lot lizard. 6.5

House (1985) - Believe it or not, I was walking on air by the end of this movie due to its cheesy horror thrills. William Katt delivers a convincing if subdued lead performance mainly reacting to stuff around him (I know, I know, "acting is reacting" as the expression goes). George Wendt make this movie, though. 8

Donnie Darko (2001) - It asks the viewer to do a lot of heavy lifting for the story to the point of being borderline incoherent. Lots of stuff to admire, though. 6

Also this week:

The Re-Education of Molly Singer (2023) - It's pretty much a weird sanded-down version of No Hard Feelings, but I appreciate its super scrappy charm and peculiar lightheartedness. Just like main character, there are a ton of problems with this movie even though its heart is in the right place. 7

Burnt (2015) - An also-ran version of 2014's Chef (It was even titled the same name at one point it its development) with some distinct flourishes and a lot of B-roll. This probably could have worked as a whole with a more incisive approach and sharper editing. 6

Boxcar Bertha (1972) - Without a doubt one of my top 5 Scorsese pictures. 8

American Cyborg: Steel Warrior (1993) - You can tell this is a popcorn classic based on the title alone! 7

reply

Yeah, Donnie Darko was such a good movie when I was young but it lost a lot of its effect on me through the years.

Haven’t seen your other ones.

the eye 2002 - finally saw this singaporean horror. a good ghost story revolving around a woman who gets a cornea transplant. 7/10

the eye 2 (2004) - this really drops off. they did a lot pf editing from what i can tell from the boards and runed it. 5/10

dumplings (2004) - good hong kong horror revolving around aging and abortion. the lead character does a great job. 7.5/10

threads (1984) - finally saw this much touted post nuclear war british made movie. i found the beginning boring as it was like a documentary. it gets better in the last half as it focuses on the ruth character. one of the bleakest movies ever. 7.5/10

dark water (2002) - japanese original which was better than the american remake. one of tsaddest horror endings ever. just heart breaking. 7/10

reply

hownos went Asian this week! That’s rare and cool. I had a pretty intense Asian movie phase five years ago and bought a shit load of DVDs , The eye being if of them.

Dumpling: only saw the Short version. 6.5/10

The other two are on my list.

reply

these have been on the watchlist for quite sometime.

reply

Yo! Better late that never lol

None of yours this week for me, SK.

Hair (1979)

A bunch of hippies jump around New York singing about their horoscope and how they have a butt. I didn’t enjoy some parts of the film as much this time around, but I did enjoy still a large percentage of the songs. The ending, yet again, broke my heart. Lots of movies have sad endings, but this one is seared in my brain forever. And it just dawned on me this time around that not only did Berger go to war by mistake, but he also had 0% training. Anyway, I liked that Forman put the scenes in the real world instead of on a sound stage, and made me miss the days where filmmakers would put actual extras in their movies, instead of CGI crowds. There were so many people in this film!

Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

Katnip is back at it with the love triangles and burning gowns and murders in an arena filled with creatures (and people) with silly names. Like the first one, but with monkeys. It’s ok, I wasn’t offended by it. Jena Malone is always a pleasure to watch. But oh boy, if Hair was lots of real people, in the real world, this was a very sharp contrast in that regard. Also, why were we so into braids in the 2010s?

Totally Killer (2023)

A modern teen is transported to the 80s to try to stop a slash-y killer from killing everyone and her mom. Eeeerm, nope, did not like it, did not have fun. Watch Freaky instead.

Ennio (2021)

Didn’t catch the beginning, but it was an informative film about the career, work and influence of Ennio Morricone. Pretty standard format of interviews, and photos/movie clips. I enjoyed it.

Plan 75 (2022)

Hey old people, forget about enjoying your twilight years, why not euthanasia? In the near future Japan introduces a new policy, where anyone over 75 can voluntarily be euthanized, in order to deal with the problem of an ageing society. It was certainly a film that gives some food for thought. I am not Japanese, so I don’t know if the film would be viewed differently if I was of that culture, but it was a somewhat sad watch. The main elder heroine was still working at 78 (I think) and through happen stance has little choice but to enter the “campaign”. And it makes you wonder, is this an actual future my generation would face, as Europe also has an ageing population. IDK, I liked it, even if it threw me into an existential crisis for a day or two. There are also two other characters that we follow, with their own journeys. I think it’s a recommend from me.

reply

Hi Mina!

Interesting to say the least.

I hope I’ll enjoy Totally killer more than you did!

reply

I hope you'll enjoy it more too!

But if you don't, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, The Final Girls or Freaky are all excellent imo, if you're in the mood for slashy horror comedy.

reply

Saw all three of them.

The final girls is my fav out of the three.

Have you seen Becky (2020)? Pretty good too.

reply

Have not seen it. IDK if I can handle both Joel McHale _and_ Kevin James, but I might give it a watch.

And I saw on the IMDB that it has a sequel, The Wrath of Becky. Double feature maybe?

reply

You might like Vicious Fun 2020 if you haven't already seen it.

reply

I haven't seen it, but it looks good! I'm always on the look-out for a good horror comedy.

reply

You rock! Man I missed you!

The 8th was my birthday and last weekend I was in Italy, so I couldn't watch my usual programming. I did start a rewatch of Psych, which seemed logical after having watched Monk last year.

Movies

-Piccolo Grande Amore (1993)
So I'm in Italy and there's nothing on except this Italian movie. Terrible! It featured mostly British actors, like David Warner, who were atrociously dubbed as well. The paycheck must've been good, although they put in no effort.

TV Shows

-Psych - marathon

Happy belated birthday my dear!!
