Dwayne Johnson apologizes for asking those living 'paycheck to paycheck' to donate to his Maui wildfire fund

I'm sure he meant well and all, but forgets the average person doesn't even begin to come close to what Oprah or Johnson make and have in the bank$$$$$ and for Oprah, she could donate at least $3 Billion and still be filthy rich and rebuild the town, but I'm willing to bet she's waiting to scoop up at least a 100 Acres of land on Maui before all is said and done..

Oprah's only goal is some of the most valuable beachfront property on earth.

Oprah's been doing this for decades. Back in the late 90s Oprah started her Angel Network. My sister, mom, and I were shopping in a mall, and there was a very large clear plastic money holder with a huge hot air balloon decoration on top that looked like a globe. It was one of Oprah's Angel Network enticements. My sister and mom both started getting cash out of their bags to put in Oprah's big globe. I told them to put their money away because why does Oprah need money from us paupers when she's the queen of money?

When I think of Oprah, I'm reminded of the scene in BREAKING BAD where Walt and Skyler rented a storage unit for all the $$$$$ they made through Blue Meth and it was stacked probably 4 feet high: All Hundreds most likely..

reply

That sounds about right.

I understand a certain 'WTH!?!' reaction to a multi millionaire superstar asking for money but at least Oprah and The Rock promised $10 million to the fund, that's not small potatoes. I also think his reaction vid was pretty classy and he seems like a good dude in general, just trying to do a good thing.

reply

I agree he is a classy good guy. As far as small potatoes, Oprah's potato is a lot smaller than The Rock's. The amounts of $10 million from both of them aren't proportionate to their individual wealth. The Rock is worth $800 million, so $10 million is .0125 of his wealth. Oprah is worth $2.8 billion, so $10 million is approximately .0035 of her wealth. Oprah should be opening the wallet a little wider if she wants to go the route of asking others to contribute.

Fair breakdown, assuming the numbers are right and I have no cause to doubt you.

It reminds me of a comedian, it may have been Colin Quinn, commenting on the Live Aid series of concerts featuring dozens of music stars asking for donations to assist Ethiopia during a famine back in the 80s: "Couldn't the Jackson Family just pay for all of this?"

Good line, I understand that reaction.

reply

It's a very good line and no doubt true!

I have a family member who is a highly successful realtor in a seriously booming real estate market. Her husband is also highly successful as a contractor. They have lived in four stately homes/mansions over the course of their marriage with each one bigger and better than the one before. She is always on social media asking family and friends to cough up money to support their daughter going on "mission" trips to foreign lands. They really are vacations in which their daughter photographs locals to whom she "ministers" so she can build her photography business.

Oh, I almost forgot. They just spent three weeks in Paris in a rented apartment that was so close to the Eiffel Tower it looked like you could reach out the window and touch it. That had to have set them back a few francs.

It's all the same mindset to me. What's mine is mine and what's yours should be mine too.

reply

Haha! That does sound obnoxious, I agree.

'Help us out, we're spending most of our money on this mansion and cool vacations, any small donation will help!'

reply

'Help us out, we're spending most of our money on this mansion and cool vacations, any small donation will help!'

This is the perfect summary of their thinking! I swear she has actually said "any small donation will help" on her begging posts.

reply

This speaks to a lack of dignity and self-awareness, jeez. They sound like they're doing better than anyone on the block and they don't even know it.

I was embarrassed to ask my neighbor to borrow his oil filter wrench this summer for my lawn tractor, but he's a cool guy and we often exchange favors. If I lived in a mansion and just got back from Paris I would expect a punch in the nose lol:)

reply

Agree. They don't spend one second thinking outside of themselves to ponder "How does this look to others?"

You sound like a classy person and a great neighbor.

reply

Thanks:)

Being a good neighbor and decent pays off, when you're down and I will pick you up. When the next storm hits my house maybe you share some soup with me. It's common sense. It's nice to be nice.

The hand that gives, receives.

reply

True, it's good to help out the people around you, it sets a good example for our kids too. Plus, who knows when life may sucker punch you right in the kisser, we all need a hand once in awhile and lifting a guy up feels right.

reply

Did anyone confirm if him and Oprah actually ponied up 10 million of their own coin?

reply

Good question. I can't find proof they did, but I did find sources that say it was a COMBINED $10 million - $5 million each. Especially for Oprah, that's the loose change she would find under her sofa cushions.
