What did you lads watch this week? (10/01-10/07) CLOSED

What a Week lads!!!

Knock at the cabin (2023 Prime): M. Knight Shyamalan went full biblical on that one! I’ve had the pleasure to watch it with my brother and nephew and it made for a lot of fun conversations and speculations about what would happened next and what was going on as the movie tackled many subjects and offered all kinds of allegories. We did have a few laughs too. The movie looks great and the actors are good but the thing is, in the end, we all found the resolution too bright, happy and restrained. We hoped for a final boom that never came. My rating: 6.5/10

The forgotten (2004 TV): Look, I too had bit of trouble swallowing the reveal as I thought I was watching a normal movie about crazy people but I appreciated the special effects we got and wouldn’t have gotten if the twist hadn’t existed. Turns out this movie is not down to earth at all, it’s way out there. My wife thought it was a bit too stupid. My rating: 6/10

Cocaine bear (2023 Prime): I think at this point you guys are aware that I’m not very demanding with my movies and especially approaching this genre. as long as I have a few laughs and enjoy myself that’s all that really matters. Well here, the characters were fun (especially the old cop dude plus this movie is special because of Liotta’s last performance) ce, the story and dialogues were funny and I had a good time. Much more than I expected word with all the bad reviews. My sole complaint would be the CGI that took me out of the movie at times. My rating: 8/10

Men (2022 Prime): I’m not a big fan of this director but this movie was simply sublime. It gave me Melancholia vibes but even more satisfying as a whole. This movie is nearly perfect to me. The cinematography is perfect though. For sure. I think I felt how they wanted me to feel which wasn’t really scared but rather mesmerized, hypnotized, uncomfortable and creeped out. I’m pretty sure. Did I catch all the symbolism and metaphors though? I’m not really sure. Here is my very own crazy conclusion though: “ after suffering from a severely traumatic relationship, Harper goes for a trip vacation and there she faces her inner turmoil and building up hatred towards men. She cuts (stab) the links she had with the the male gender and has a spiritual rebirth. While at the manor, she discovers a skill and kills another man that wasn’t treating her with respect. She is now free to love again and hopefully give birth someday.” My rating: 8.5/10

Southbound (Friday night special): This movie is a hell of a ride in all the meanings of the word. One must not try to make sense of it all. One has to simply let itself be immerse with it. I did. plus it had a pretty neat horror movie music track (à la Halloween or Exorcist). My favourite part: The car hit/ abandoned hospital. Best quote: “Quit being so fucking mysterious!” My rating: 6.5/10

Housebound (2014 Friday late night special): With hindsight, this movie takes a bit too long to get to the violent part but I personally enjoyed the characters, their interactions and there were many good quotes and funny moments. You just had to PAY ATTENTION. The cop that lives nearby was a real fire cracker. My rating: 7/10

Halloween III: season of the witch (Saturday night Special): This was actually way better than I thought it would be. I had a lot of fun with it and the cast did good. I mean, an evil Halloween mask factory, how cool is that!? My rating: 7/10

Hack-O-lantern (Saturday late night special): On one hand, it’s severely lacking in comedy and horror but on the other it has surprising depth and character development. Not a total waste of time. My rating: 5/10

It’s always sunny in Philadelphia S14: Not among y my fav but still good. 7.5/10

Knock at the Cabin 9/10
The forgotten 6/10
Cocaine bear 8/10
Men 8/10
Southbound 8/10
Halloween III: season of the witch 5/10

I watched:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 1931 6/10 I found this somewhat underwhelming. The cinematography is good and the performances are fine, but not exceptional. I didn't find it as interesting as it should have been.

Blow-Up 1966 (rewatch) 8/10 I think this is Antonioni's best film out of what I have seen. The performances are effective, although not exceptional. I liked the look and feel of the film. It is a stylish film with substance and intelligence. It's a fairly interesting story too.

Thirteen Women 1932 7/10 This was pretty good.

The Boogeyman 2023 6/10 Acting is decent and there are a couple effective eerie moments, but overall this is fairly generic and a little bland.

Svengali 1931 6/10 Good performances, but I didn't find the story very interesting.

Haunted Mansion 2023 5/10 The film wastes a good cast and never finds the right tone. It isn't funny or scary and the screenplay is mediocre. A couple decent scenes. And why is this thing 2 hours and 3 minutes?

Emmanuelle Exposed 1982 6/10 Cinematography was good and there were some scenes I liked, but the story wasn't very interesting. Some entertaining moments, but uneven overall. If you are a fan of Jess Franco or are a dirty perv, you might enjoy it.

Totally Killer 2023 7/10 This was an amusing horror comedy that feels like a mix of Back to the Future and Scream. Not everything works, but it is fairly enjoyable.

Southbound 2015 8/10 (rewatch) An interesting, thought provoking, and intense film. I enjoyed revisiting this.

Picnic at Hanging Rock 1975 9/10 (rewatch) The film is very well directed on every level and this is my favourite Peter Weir film out of the ones I have seen. The performances of the girls are quite captivating and worked with the story and tone of the film. Picnic at Hanging Rock has a dreamlike, haunting feel to it. The cinematography is lush and beautiful and the score is atmospheric and helps enhance the film. I liked the costumes as well.

The Ring 2002 8/10 (rewatch) Naomi Watts is good here and I enjoyed the film more this time around than I did when I first saw it.

Cobweb 2023 6/10 Some effective creepy moments, but acting isn't great and the story has some flaws. Ending is unsatisfactory and feels too abrupt.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch 1982 5/10 (rewatch) I don't find this one very entertaining.

The fact that you rate Southbound 8/10 makes me love you TO THE BONES!

The fact that you rate Halloween 3 5/10 makes me hate YOUR GUTS!!

Leave Emmanuelle alone, she too old for you lad.

Picnic at Hanging Rock: On my watchlist

Totally killer too.

The ring : Saw it for he fiers time this year and the reason I waited so long was because I thought I would not like it and turns out it was a great film. 8/10

reply

Totally Killer 2023 8/10 This was a lot of fun, very similar to Freaky or Happy death day.

Sick 2022 5.5/10 I thought this is going to be a slam dunk, but I did not like the characters, and the end reveal was not for me.

reply

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster 2023 6.5/10 This was definitely the most original thing I've seen all year. Good Performances and some pretty graphic kills. There was a lot of underlying subtext/message stuff here.

Vicaria is a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal murder of her brother, she embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life.

reply

Totally killer is on my watch list.

The black girl looks interesting.

reply

You just had to PAY ATTENTION.

I WAS PAYING FUCKING ATTENTION...THAT MOVIE JUST BLEW.😬

reply

Tsk tsk tsk, look at the reviews and ratings and you’ll quickly see your in minority on that one lad.

I HAVE HOWNOS AND ALI ON MY SIDE...I HAVE THE PRESTIGE VOTES.

reply

I have one thing to say to you SK - You can't punch ectoplasm!

And Heeeey!❤️

I love Housebound, 'tis most excellent.

I didn't really like Cocaine bear all that much, and I could swear they dubbed nom-nom-nom sounds for the damn thing haha.

Men and Knock at the cabin are to be finished at some point in the future.

My turn!

Mothering Sunday (2021)
Jane is a servant to some rich people in post WW1 England, having a secret affair with the rich son of some other rich people, and the rich son is due to marry his rich fiancé. On Mothering Sunday she is granted the day off, and has a secret rendezvous with Rich Son while all the other rich people are at lunch. Jump to years later to a slightly older Jane, trying to write a book (I presumed a memoir of sorts) in timeline 2. Jump to even older Jane, trying to write a book (I presumed a memoir of sorts) in timeline 3. Tragedy, tragedy, sex, tragedy, tragedy, award. I clicked on it, and I watched all of it, but I didn’t particularly enjoy it. The majority of the story takes place in the post WW1 storyline, but it just randomly jumps to the different times in her life, and I didn’t think this was structured well. Some pretty cinematography, the performances were good overall, and if you enjoy naked ladies, there’s plenty of Odessa Young on display. I would rate it 2/6 ginger bushes.

The Belko Experiment (2016) re-watch
Belko Industries offers an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment in Bogota, Columbia. If you are a self-starter; proactive and approach every task with a Go get em attitude, you’ll soon be top employee.

Skills we look for:

Ability to follow through on tasks in a timely manner and meet tight dealines;
Ability to accurately follow direction;
Knowing how to use an axe, man.

It’s James Gunn, it’s gonna be weird, and a little fucked up, and fun. Greatly enjoyed watching people killing other people for the second time around. Rating – Yes.

Roubaix, une lumière/ Oh Mercy! (wtf English?)(2019)

Follows the police men and occasional woman of Roubaix, France, while they investigate arson, and later the murder of an elderly woman. I caught it on TV and didn’t catch the very beginning, but it was engaging enough for me not to click away. This too jumps a lot, but it feels more well integrated into the fabric of the film, and almost slice-of-life-ish. Realistic setting, realistic performances, yelling, a who-dun-it. There is some re-enacting of the crime, which I wonder if it is a real thing that happens in these sorts of investigations. Sara Forestier is the stand out performance for me in this film. Overall good.

You’re back eh!?

You’re were gone but not forgotten. You name was spoken ever so often.

Glad to see you back love!

You’re back eh!?

TBD

Thanks for the kind words, SK! ❤️

Glad you're still around, holding down the fort! You know I always loved your weekly thread, and long ago you made the very short list of my favourite people here haha.

I took a look at that watch party you all are doing now (glad you were able to finaly make a "movie club" work), maybe I'll join one day (if I ever figure out the time zone problem).

reply

If you join us I will be very happy. You won’t be the only girl, tcrum is usually there also and sslssg came once or twice.

reply

I don't think being a girl is the biggest issue haha. 9 PM EST is 4 AM EET. A little early for me, I have to be honest haha.

reply

We usually watch 2 movies. The other one’s at 6pm for you. Maybe you could join for a late night one.

It’s Donnie Darko tonight.

Either way, hope to see you on my weekly thread tomorrow!

Cheers

A week of horror:

The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975) - the title of this movie is wrong and they tried to age a young margot kidder. the premise is not bad despite the sort of incest angle. i thought it was a canadian production because of the canadian character actors but it's not. 6/10

The Corruption of Chris Miller (1974) - love to see jean seberg in this who is considered old at at age 35. and there there is the beautiful marisol with her mesmerizing eyes. a decent plot with some twists. 6.5/10

The Psychic (1974) - this a is a fulci movie. it's more of a murder mystery than horror but i was pleasantly surprised as it works for the most part. the motive about the painting wasn't flushed out completely. 6.5/10

Shutter (2004) - finally saw this thai horror and it is very good. loved the physical nature of the ghost with the change in weight of the lead character. just a good ghost story in general. 7/10

reply

I’ll have to check The Shutter out.

Haxan (1922) - Great imagery. Narratively dated in some ways but a great movie. 9/10

Nosferatu (1922) - I liked this a lot more that I did the first time I saw it. Great Dracula adaptation. 8/10

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) - Pretty good. 7/10

The Phantom Carriage (1921) - Great story and imagery. 9/10

The Phantom of the Opera (1925) - Great. 8.5/10

The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) - One of my favorite horror-comedies. 10/10

The Nun (2018) - Decent movie that is over hated. 6.5/10

The Nun II (2023) - Different from the first but on a similar level. 6.5/10

The Company of Wolves (1984) - Brilliant horror fairy tale. Narratively loose which will bother some but I really enjoyed it. 9.5/10

Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997) - I wish it was more fantastical. Sigourney Weaver was brilliant in this and really elevated the movie. 7.5/10

The White Reindeer (1952) - Finnish folk-horror. I enjoyed it given the uniqueness of it all. 8/10

Scream (1996) - One of my favorite movies. 10/10

Scream 2 (1997) - Great sequel. 9/10

Scream 3 (2000) - Great new 4K release from Paramount, just like the first two. Major picture quality improvement over the old blu-ray. As a movie definitely the lesser of the original trilogy but I prefer this over parts 4-6, likely due to nostalgia. 7.5/10

The Others (2001) - Great new 4K release from StudioCanal. One of the best horror movies of the 21st century thus far. Quality across the board. 9.5/10

reply

The nun: not as scary as it should’ve been but very atmospheric, dark and well acted. 6/10

Scream: 7.5/10
Scream 2: 6.5/10
Scream 3: 7/10
(Scream 4: 7.5/10)

The others: 7/10

Hi! A little late but here goes -

From your list (did not watch all of these last week) -

Knock at the Cabin - 5/10 - I like M. Night but he is so inconsistent. He can be brilliant, mid and terrible from one movie to the next. This one was mid. Some nice camerawork and moments of tension with a meh payoff at the end.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch - 8/10 - Probably my favorite horror frachise and this was actually the first Halloween movie I ever saw as a kid. It had a big impact and got me looking for the rest.

I did watch all of these last week -

Movie Club features

Housebound - I'm new to this hybrid type of horror/comedy. Housebound delivered the goods of setting up tension and diffusing it with some laughs. The main girl was annoying at first, then I started to appreciate her sardonic cracks. 7/10

Hack-O-Lantern - This one was really out there I had no idea what was going on...Satanic ritual or Duran Duran video? Definitely not boring! 5/10

I'm really liking Tubi and caught a couple more good flicks also

House Party 2 (rewatch) My favorite of the House Party series. Many 90s hip-hop and R&B artist cameos (the Full Force dudes cracked me up as the college security). Good music, and of course an awesome party for Act 3. All the Kid N Play flicks are just effortless fun and this one had a lot of laughs. 7.5/10

The Usual Suspects (rewatch) - Is it too early to call it a "classic"? I loved this movie. Top actors doing some of their best work in a compelling story, where every moment feels like high stakes and all leading up to a very satisfying finale. 9/10

reply

I always wanted to see the House party movies. I’m pretty sure I rented the first one on VHS one day but I don’t remember watching it.

The usual suspect: In my top 20. 10/10

reply

I'm sorry for the late reply, but I was in Italy for the weekend!

I've been there a couple of times before, but it was my first time visiting Verona, Venice and Milan. The weather was so hot, it was like summer! Now I'm back in the cold.🥶
