Question to those who can read sheet music

Read without thinking about it. How does your brain work?

I heard a professional session artist say he can read music like reading a newspaper, but instead of reading with his mouth, he's reading it with his fingers. I thought that was a good way to think about music.

Do you have your own 'mind model' for this?

I struggle with the lower staff being different to the upper staff. Like why does it change? I need a mind model for that.

reply

I can't sight read, but to shed a little light on your last, each staff/clef represents a different range of notes, e.g. the left and right hand when playing piano. Not sure what you mean by "change."

reply

Yes, I can read music to sing, but I struggle to play the piano because I can play by ear and I get ahead of myself and can't concentrate on the notes.

reply

I studied Music at University; when I look at the notes, I can hear the music in my head.

reply

Why even read sheet music? I only read good music!

reply

Practice and it becomes second nature.
