Have you been getting this error message?

This has happened maybe 15 times the last two days.

You are being rate limited

What happened?
The owner of this website (moviechat.org) has banned you temporarily from accessing this website.

reply

I haven't received any errors, nor do people PM (e.g., seems more like an absolute) as nothing I say really matters. But, I'm okay with that.

reply

Interesting. Haven’t seen that so far.

reply

doesnt look like an error message to me. it says what it means "rate limited". its trying to slow you down. the owner of moviechat never thought a user would use MC as much as you do. essentially, you look like a bot or an attack. certainly not human :p

try the tor browser, it will change your ip and it wont look like your slamming the server from 1 address.... or maybe opera browser and turn the vpn on.
thats my guess.

reply

It said "Error 1001" or something like that. I accidentally deleted it and couldn't remember the number. The thing is that I'm not slamming the server. There are times where I logged in and the message came up on the first thread I clicked.

reply

i meant slamming in the most lovey-dovey way of course :)

i get rate-limiting on my dns server if i hit 1k connections in a certain time limit. but its certainly odd with few connections unless it remembers your ip.

reply

too many quick hits will do that

reply

Yeah, but it's happened on login on the first thread I clicked on.

reply

I'm getting this message too, I just keep clicking until it loads but that's starting to get annoying

reply

You only have 3 posts. Are you sure you aren't referring to the post countdown limit of waiting 5 minutes?

reply

I haven't had that message of waiting 5 minutes in quite some time

reply

I don't remember how many posts you need before it goes away.

reply

I made a thread about it shortly after I joined this site asking them about this?? They said it was to determine if you were a Bot or not and that eventually, it would go away or lesson over time..

reply

Well I'll just spam refresh until I get the site to load or they do away with the stupid rate limit,

reply

Maybe two or three times in the past few days. Thought that my browser was having issues.

reply

I've used this site on my phone and laptop as well as two different browsers. Same issue.

reply

Yeah, the site has been a bit 'buggy' lately. Sometimes I'm able to remedy a given by refreshing/re-clicking the link, while other times the hyperlink is mislinked or just dead. A few times, I'd click on a profile from the search bar and then I'm suddenly directed to the frontpage.

Hopefully, MC will fix these issues.

reply

Everyone has had an issue with the reloading to the main page at some point. I guess it's just unfixable.

reply

I got the rate limiter to kick in with what I consider to be normal browsing. Then I waited a couple of seconds and clicked 35 links as fast as I could. That didn't trigger the rate limiter so sometimes it's triggered by normal browsing.

The rate limiting happens before the MC server so it doesn't matter if you are logged in or not.

"In computer networks, rate limiting is used to control the rate of requests sent or received by a network interface controller. It can be used to prevent DoS attacks and limit web scraping."

reply

I'm still getting it and I haven't noticed a pattern. I've gotten the message logged in, logged out, clicking on the first topic I see after logging in and clicking on the 20th topic after logging in, laptop and phone, on the site for a few seconds, on the site for a few minutes...

reply

I'm getting a different error (had it 3 times when the site wouldn't load and I offered to help by clicking the link in rapid succession which caused Cloudflares flood protection to kick in). Error 1034? Ray ID?

reply

I'm getting the Cloudflares error too, but I don't think it's that error number.
