Auntie/Uncle shouldn't be used for your non-related friends

My friend refers to me as Uncle to her kids and I noticed she does the same with her female friends, calling them auntie.

None of us are related, not even through marriage

I feel like correcting her.

It's a compliment. Shows that your friend is letting her kids know that you are considered family.

Go ahead and correct her, because she's setting you up for frequent free babysitting! How can you refuse, when you're an "uncle"?

That said, plenty of non-western cultures use "Auntie" or "Uncle" as a term of endearment, for an older person who is as close as family but not related. And believe me, you do NOT want to argue with an "Auntie" over this!

Spanish use uncle for guy, like ‘eh tio’, means hey guy, but literally hey uncle.

reply

I'm Auntie to my friend's four legged children.

reply

Okay that's your opinion and I don't see it as something to be bothered about. It's a lot easier than always referring to them as "my mom's best friend/my dad's best friend."

Try watching any Indian movie, especially those in Hindi or Telegu. Anyone unrelated from an older generation is called uncle or auntie.
