Yea it crazy place to be with no money, and finding decent affordable place is a challenge on disability

I couldve rented out this depressing basement in queens or have a roommate in 2016, i moved to portland instead, and even that was a challenge, somehow rented a place where i didnt make three tomes the rent

But i moved back to ohio after a year and a half

I just wanted to be where the heart was in our culture and not having a car, NY makes sense but I didnt like a depressing basement. Maybe I should have.

Portland, Maine or Oregon?

What is your disability?

reply

Yes, many times.

reply

Many times - great place to visit, but not to live.

7th grade class trip. We visited the World Trade Center a year before it was attacked.

I also bought a really bad counterfeit watch for $5. It broke within a couple weeks.

reply

I VISITED THE WORLD TRADE CENTER A YEAR AFTER IT WAS ATTACKED...WE BOTH SAW SOMETHING SPECTACULAR...BUT I WOULD RATHER HAVE YOUR MEMORY.

reply

Still hard to believe all these years later.

I went as a teenager, and HATED it! Hated it so much that I haven't been back since.

Of course traveling with a Category 5 dysfunctional family is always miserable, but I hated everything I saw, except the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a lightning storm that happened one evening. This was the 1970s, when NYC was "gritty", and there were streetwalkers everywhere (I wasn't interested), the streets were filthy, the sky was bright orange at night (no, really), everyone yelled and there was garbage everywhere I looked, the subways were terrifying but my dad wouldn't pay for taxis, everything was gray and filthy and everyone yelled, etc. There was no money for anything except a few museums, and the evenings were spent fighting at cheap restaurants, or visiting my parents' college friends. I loathed every minute of the entire trip.

Born and raised. Upper West Side Manhattan, then moved to Brooklyn when I was 17. My parents moved back to Manhattan when they were in their late 50s. I currently live in Reno, NV, and every time I look at a NY newspaper online, boy, am I glad I got out.

I have relatives in Staten Island. Never been to NYC.

I guess Staten Island seems "quieter" of all the boroughs?

I think you mean you've never been to Manhattan. Residents of the other boroughs often say "I'm going to the city" when they are going to Manhattan, though it is all NYC.

I really know very little about Staten Island, except how it got its name: A Dutch captain approached it and asked, "Is that an Island?"

reply

Haha😄

I’ve heard for years, though there is some debate, that Coney Island was named for its enormous wild rabbit population. Coney is a medieval term for rabbit, I guess the early Dutch explorers gave it the name and probably had many fine dinners there by the water.

reply

I've been to New York twice when I was a kid and I wasn't impressed.

reply

Yes, many times.
I’ve been working in The Bronx going on 22 years now but I assume you mean Manhattan?

Manhattan has some gorgeous museums and the Wall Street area is very picturesque but a lot of it is littered with crap and covered in graffiti, it’s far too crowded, the parking is impossible and the subway is loaded with homeless junkies and schizoids .

I actually prefer The Borough Of The Bronx, the black, Dominican, West African, Puerto Rican, white Irish and Italian neighborhoods are all pretty distinctive, you know know where you stand and what to watch out for in The Bronx. A lot of really decent families and people live in The Bronx actually, you just need to keep your eyes open to avoid serious trouble.
