What are your thoughts on the parents of the young children film reviewing website, commonsensemedia.com?
Personally I don't think it's good. I used to read their reviews a lot, and they'll rate movies incorrectly. They are biased and only give it positive reviews if they agree with the agendas. They'll say there's sexism in movies when there isn't and that there's "zero" diversity in very diverse movies only because of "racial stereotyping" that isn't really there, they just see it that way. Plus, both the little kid's reviews and the parent's are very sloppy and poorly written.
I don't trust them. A more reliable source for parental guidance in movies is PluggedIn from Focus on the Family (although they're biased in their own ways.)
I cannot speak to the reliability of that site, though I instinctively hesitate to trust a media outlet that advertises a specialty in catering to a specific audience of the uninformed. In this case, parents looking for objectionable elements in a work of art are going to be let by the biases of the people who are tasked with slotting that art into digestible categories (and labeling some of those elements has objectionable).
I still like being surprised by movies, so if something piques my interest, I will commit to a watch. Even if it happens to turn out less than perfect, most media can still foster a fun discussion with fellow viewers because the broadest and the most subtle material can be interpreted in different ways. ;-)
Just look at the parental guidance page on imdb. It's probably the best, quickest way to decide if your child can see it or not. The problem could be that these sites would make their parents keep their children from watching movies that are actually harmless. The parents think otherwise because they believe what they read on the site. People will be bothered by different things. You have a team assuming the things that a large group of people will be bothered by.
