Otis didn't invent the elevator instead he invented something perhaps more important, the elevator brake, which made skyscrapers a practical reality. It's a common misconception that Otis invented the elevator.

When I was a kid, a few of the guys would let me drive the elevator. I got pretty good at it where I didn’t even need to slow down, just let go at the right point.

One elevator manufacturer is Schindler, so in the UK and AU they are called “Schilndler’s Lifts.”
