Virtue-Signallers on Social Media
Has anyone ever noticed, via their time on social media/forums, that whenever a *single* individual says something remotely problematic (i.e. sexist, racist, homophobic etc), you tend to get a couple of hundred posters highlighting how 'terrible' the sexism, racism, homophobia is on social media/forums. I often come across the critical posts to begin with, and make the, quite reasonable, assumption that there are *dozens* of asshole posters saying the same shitty thing.
Now, don't get me wrong; one sexist/racist/homophobe is MORE than enough, but I do find that the response to the initial offence tends to over-exaggerate the issue, which, in turn, might cause women, POC and members of the LGBTQ+ community to believe that they are more vulnerable/at risk than they actually are. THUS, the virtue-signallers are in fact MAKING THINGS WORSE, and potentially making historically marginalised individuals feel even more vulnerable, all because the former want to promote their 'superior virtue'. It's all very VERY selfish and self-absorbed.
To give an example, I was browsing through a Lego forum where *one* idiot complained that a new set had a female, rather than male, minifigure. Yes, the person complaining is a moron (and that's before you take into account that these days long hair doesn't mean that a person is a de facto female, and that heads can easily be swapped for gender/race with Lego minifig), but does it really necessitate several dozen posters replying complaining about sexist man-babies, as if the latter problem is some sort of 'epidemic', rather than a sign that out of hundred individuals, one will always find *one* idiot?
