I imagine nobody's going to know this band but me here probably. But I came across this whole performance by McGuffey Lane a couple days ago and have been amazed how they sound almost exactly like their first album my oldest brother had, which you could also hear on youtube. Almost as in a few special effects or double tracking that were done for the album. Their voices and instruments are practically perfect. If the music interests you, just compare the first song, People Like You, which was popular back in the day, at least in Ohio. It got radio play on our rock stations along with Long Time Lovin' You.

If anybody likes country or southern rock, that was when these guys had their heyday but remaining members of the band still play today. This was the time of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels Band, Pure Prairie League, The Eagles, Molly Hatchet, (my older brothers were fans of these) etc. and of course, Urban Cowboy (1980) that followed.

I'm in Columbus and have definitely heard of McGuffey Lane, but I'm not real familiar with their music. I think one of their former members is a guy named John Schwab, who would sometimes appear on one of the local radio stations here in Columbus. He was great when he was interviewed. He also owned a recording studio that my family and I lived really close to at one time. I always wanted to go record there, but never did! πŸ˜ƒ

McGuffey Lane had quite a following. I have two older sisters and I'm pretty sure that they had a McGuffey Lane album back in the 70s...but I don't know which one.

reply

Hi, yes, John Schwab is the main singer now. I think I read about them having their own label.

I also had two older brothers, they were in high school when I was in elementary but grew up with their music, too. My oldest brother had their first album. I actually am not familiar with the rest of their music, but will probably look into it.

I saw them a couple or so years ago in my hometown in Delaware Co. and just recently also near there. So, I was listening to them again.

So, do you play guitar? You mentioned recording and I can't help but notice your user name. I also come from a family of avid golfers, I do on rare occasion.

reply

Hi, neighbor! πŸ˜ƒ It is amazing the way Delaware County has grown and been developed over the years. It's almost like Delaware is a suburb of Columbus now.

Guitar playing is a very passionate hobby of mine, but I am strictly an amateur. I posted this about a month ago...a video of me playing "Little Martha" by The Allman Bros. on the guitar. I thought I'd better post something to show that I actually do play guitar! πŸ˜ƒ Here it is:

https://moviechat.org/general/General-Discussion/647d1df3f227251e479fb0d9/Video-of-me-playing-guitar

I love golf also...but, as a married father of three boys, I just don't get to play much anymore. Have you ever been to The Memorial Tournament? I've been several times, but not since 2003. Jack Nicklaus does such a great job hosting the tournament and Muirfield Village is such a beautiful golf course.

Anyway, if no one's officially welcomed you here...welcome to this site! I'm still fairly new myself (started posting this past November). Hope you keep posting here...nice to have another person from Ohio here! Have a great night!

reply

Wow, that is really cool, you are certainly skilled. I used to play piano but not very well and lack of practice has not done me any favors. I'm sure you keep at it. My oldest son started to play guitar when in school but didn't continue. We had hoped to someday hear him entertain us around the fire but I don't think that's going to happen.

I'm not much of a neighbor currently, I'm outside the Cleveland/Akron area now but my parents' house is still there and we're there quite often. Yes, the area is growing very rapidly, to my consternation.

Oh, yes, been to the Memorial Tournament a few times. My father used to marshal there for many years. So many hats and shirts from that! My oldest brother caddied at the tournament end of 70's. Both my brothers caddied at the Columbus Country Club and golfed in high school. My second brother did some pro stuff after for a while, I think he gave lessons, too, and even took some himself from someone I went to high school with, always golfing. Most of my golfing consists of hitting balls at my parents' place into the pasture/woods. My first job (snack shop) was at Indian Run East golf club, do you remember that course? They sold that into a development over there around Lewis Center some years back.

Thanks for the welcome! I used to post on imdb but not often. I've only posted more frequently here recently. If I watch a new movie, many times, I'd look at trivia on imdb and then come over here to see if anyone had any interesting comments. This place seems mostly about politics when you click on recent posts, lol! I honestly did not even know that there was politics on the imdb board when it was still in use. I'm glad this place is here to continue the movie forums. I think there is another one called filmboards.com that also copied over imdb forums and posts but I am not registered or post there and really don't even look over there, I just have it bookmarked.

Thanks again for sharing your talent!

Thank you very much...you are very kind! I've played guitar for 40 years now, but it's just a (very passionate) hobby. My oldest son plays drums/percussion for the school band and my middle son plays piano and the trombone. It's so much fun as a parent to see how good they're getting!

Props to you for living up in Northeast Ohio! I don't know how you get through the Winters there! πŸ˜ƒ I've only been in that part of the state a few times...it's really pretty in the Summer.

That's awesome about the golfers in your family! To be honest, golf drives me crazy...it is so simple in nature and yet so difficult (for me, anyway) to play consistently well. It's a great sport, though! That would have been so much fun to see Muirfield Village in the early days of The Memorial. My younger brother first went in 1994 and my parents and I first went in 1996. From what I understand, it's a lot more crowded and commercialized now than what it was back then.

I used to live down the road a bit from Columbus Country Club. I've never played it, but you can see a couple of the holes driving past it on East Broad Street...it's such a beautiful course! Indian Run East sounds so familiar as well...I never got to play it either, unfortunately (The Lewis Center area just keeps growing also). We've had several courses here in the Columbus area that I used to play close in the past several years. It makes me sad to think about them. 😒

I really didn't plan on posting too much here, but I really enjoy it. I never did post on IMDb, but enjoyed reading the discussions about certain movies and TV shows. I hope you continue to keep posting here...I've really enjoyed corresponding with you. Have a great day!

Thank you, GolfnGuitars! I must say, I've seen it said that Duane Allman is the best guitar player that ever lived. For you to be able to play that intricate piece is quite the achievement.

Glad your kids are keeping up and doing well in music. My youngest played trumpet for a while starting out in band, had good potential, but decided against late middle school, so that was a bit disappointing, too.

I can't remember when he started, but I remember my father marshalling all through the 90's into the 2000's. We were all spectators when my brother had caddied. I don't know if they were ever able to play CCC, maybe, but it was a private club. Drove all that way to work there but they liked it. My father worked at Western Electric there nearby. My grandmother lived near the area, but it's not a good area now.

If you can answer, I'm curious what courses have closed and just recently? I can't ask my original family, as I'm the last one already in my middle age. There was also an Indian Run West that was sold off, too. I don't think anybody in my family played those courses. I remember Tablerock mentioned quite a few times. There were others I can't recall right now.

I don't know the board culture, so I hope this side conversation is okay! It's good "talking" to you, too and I hope you have a wonderful day also!

reply

I think we're OK having this "side conversation" as long as we don't start talking politics! πŸ˜ƒ tcrum is a great poster here and I'll post on this thread also when we're done (my apologies for sidetracking your thread, tcrum).

Duane Allman was truly an amazing guitarist. He only played guitar for about 10 years of his life (started at 14, died when he was 24) and it blows me away how players like him,Jimi Hendrix, et.al., picked it up so fast. I'm one of those people who doesn't think there is a "best guitarist," per se, because there just isn't any real way to measure it. But Duane Allman is truly one of the greatest guitarists ever!

I bet I've walked by your dad when he was marshalling! πŸ˜ƒ My hat is off to him...that's not an easy thing to do and the marshals have a lot of responsibility placed on their shoulders. That is really great that he was able to do that.

I know where Western Electric used to be (I'm originally from southern Ohio and moved to Columbus in November 1991). I think it was AT&T when I first moved here, then they changed their name to Lucent Technologies. They had a long drive to work for sure! Yes, it's sad how the neighborhood there has gone downhill. 😒

I'll put a separate reply for the golf courses...I think there is a "character limit" for posts, plus it's probably easier for you to read it this way. More in a bit....

Here are the golf courses that have closed here in the Columbus area in recent years that I remember. This probably isn't all of them, but the ones I'm aware of:

1) Walnut Hills - This was a "city course" (I think it was once 18 holes, but had been reduced to 9) in East Columbus, near Reynoldsburg. They closed several years back because the neighborhood got too rough...it just wasn't safe to play golf there.
2) Rickenbacker - 18-hole course near Rickenbacker Airport in South Columbus. I think they closed in 2014 because the course got too expensive to maintain.
3) Blackhawk - 18-hole course in the Westerville area. They closed a few years back and I'm not sure why (I never played it, but was told it used to be really busy).
4. Minerva Lake - 18-hole course in Columbus. Finally closed in 2016 for housing.
5. Shamrock - 18-hole course in Dublin near the Zoo. Closed in 2015 to build more housing/condos.
6. Phoenix - 18-hole course in Grove City, built on a landfill. Closed in 2015 because of health concerns (methane gas, I think).
7. Upper Landsdowne - 18-hole course just south of Columbus (near South Bloomfield). Closed at the end of 2021 for housing.
8. Cooks Creek - 18-hole course not far from Upper Landsdowne (designed by John Cook, former OSU and PGA Tour golfer). Closed in 2021 due to $$$$.
9. Foxfire - not their Players Club course, but their other 18-hole course. Closed to build more housing.

Hey, I would agree with you on the "best" in any category because it is all subjective, but he is one of the best as you agree. Still, it's something you were able to play that. Have you written any music?

Yes, Western Electric did break up and became AT&T, of which he retired, then his retirement became Alcatel-Lucent. Of course, you know now the building is offices for Mount Carmel and they tore out Bell Labs in the back.

Wow, that's a lot of courses. Black Hawk was in my neck of the woods. I knew some of the girls from high school who worked the snack shop there but they weren't hiring when I was seeking my first job. I think they sold out to a housing developer also. Shamrock sounds familiar, too. I believe there was one that started with an S.

I looked up Table Rock, that is in Centerburg. I also saw Wyandot which might have been another regular. I remember trips to Salt Fork. Maybe my second brother played these other courses you listed in his later years. But that's a lot of closings! Thanks for listing them all with descriptors!

The politics on here suck me in. Click on the latest posts, many I pass by but some threads make me curious. Then I might feel compelled to comment on some of them. See, I didn't know there was also a "latest posts" page on IMDB until I was here at some point.

It was sure nice talking to you. Brings back more memories, too. Hope you can get back to golfing more again with what's left!

Hello again! I've composed a few things, but nothing in the public eye. My problem is that I have the worst singing voice in the world (Unfortunately, that isn't an exaggeration). Since I can't sing, I try to make my guitar sing instead! πŸ˜ƒ

I've heard of the courses that you mentioned, but haven't played any of them. I stopped at Salt Fork one time years ago...what a beautiful park. Ohio has some really nice state parks (and a few with some nice golf courses...but I haven't played any of them either!).

I have enjoyed our conversation very much also! Again, I hope you continue posting here. Hope you have a great weekend and great 4th Of July Holiday!

reply

You have a great weekend and Independence Day, too! :) See you around!

George Michael, Somebody to love.

The vocal is amazing. I consider George Michael one of the best vocalists ever. He never sounds short of breath.

Besides his singing, the guitar solo is studio quality as well.

Stunning performance!

Well the day won't be complete if I don't throw a Hawkwind song in there, cuz that's just what I do.
