Great Escape / Bridge on River Kwai

Do you think the "Great Escape" theme is kinda like the "Bridge on the River Kwai" theme (Col. Bogey march)? Especially the part (and I know these aren't the real lyrics, but everyone knows them) the part that goes "Himmler was very similar".

reply

I don't find much of any similarity between the two themes, but I am assuming you are referring to the 'Colonel Bogey March' theme on BOTRK and the recurring theme on TGE.

As an aside, I find the theme on the Great Escape much "jauntier" and "lilty" somehow, and lively in a way that clashes with the overall mood of a prison camp within Nazi Germany. Almost comedic even.

TGE was sort of a jingo. Didn't take it every seriously.

TBOTRK a much more real, challenging drama. Japanese POW camps were death traps. Taking pride in being a slave is a very misguided way to run your railroad - it showed how even virtues can be exploited for evil ends, the capacity for self-delusion/compulsion.

I was referring to the theme

Oh, OK :) Well you got the recap for free.

Yes, I always found the underlying meter and melodies to be similar.
