Kudos to E.T. and Back to the Future

For their respective filmmakers having the decency and power to say "No" to any further sequels, prequels, spin-offs and reboots to these hugely successful blockbusters, and screw Hollywood for gutting the last ounce out of the carcasses of every other popular franchise/IP.

Back to the Future was made into a cartoon series. Probably thought they could milk a few extra bucks out of it. It flopped.

reply

I don't mind spin-off cartoon serieses because they can be easily ignored as non-canon. It's much harder to do so with say Episodes I-III/VII-IX, the latest Ghostbusters sequels, Top Gun: Maverick, The Flash, Terminator Salvation/Genisys/Dark Fate, the Jurassic World films, Independence Day: Resurgence, and so on (and yes, I realise some of these are far better regarded than others).

Spielberg actually co-wrote a darker sequel to E.T. but later abandoned it, saying that he preferred that the film remain a "virgin".

reply

Isn't that the film that eventually became 'Gremlins', or am I mistaken?

Anyone, good on Spielberg for keeping E.T. a 'virgin'.

reply

Just wait till Disney gets its hands on them.

Back to the Future shouldn't have gone beyond the first movie.

reply

Perhaps, but the BTTF sequels are good. Not as good as the first film (what is?) but they don't damage the first film, and it's not as frustrating as a 20/30-years-later sequel. 3-5 years is an acceptable period to play about with canon. Anything beyond that, and you're messing about with fanboys and fangirls' preciously-guarded memories and established understanding of a franchise.

And I genuinely fear what Disney might do to E.T. if they were to get their hands on it/him. Those bastards turned down E.T. back in the day, so it would take some nerve for them to get their hands on that property and fuck it up (thankfully, Disney hasn't got its grubby hands on Universal yet, which is probably why E.T. and BTTF have both, so far, been spared).
