TRUE DIVERSITY in Art...

Isn't *only* about a diversity of races, ethnicities, genders, sexes and sexualities, although they clearly are important, but ALSO about a diversity of beliefs, ideas, opinions, personalities and characters, and yet, in recent years, I've noticed that Disney, as an example among many, has tried to homogenise its characters, particularly in the MCU (for example, Wanda Van Dyne, in the Ant-Man films, who is NOTHING like her comic-book counterpart, and is now a pale imitation of every other female, and male, character in Marvel; an utter waste of the wonderful Michelle Pfeiffer). We're also seeing this in media like the Super Mario Bros film and it would appear te upcoming Barbie film.

Characters that were fun, bubbly, sweet, effervescent and feminine are now smothered out to adhere to a certain one-size-fits-all 'Girl Boss' standard, which is SEXIST and marginalises those women/girls who DON'T adhere to that type. No wonder we've seen a rise in mental illness, self-harm and suicidal ideation among girls within the last few years. Girls are being told by supposedly 'well-meaning' types that "You must be X", when perhaps they don't want to be X. This is NOT feminism. This is ANTI-FEMINIST tyranny enforcing a rigid ideology that HARMS girls and women.

Let's promote TRUE DIVERSITY and DIFFERENCE. 😠

reply

This exactly.
We need more diversity of thought, not diversity of superficial attributes such as your racial/sexual/gender identity.

reply

I mean, I think we need *both*. Representation is really important, and one of the ways you get more diversity of thought is via diversity of experience, which often comes with different identities BUT ultimately, you're right in placing a higher premium on what people think than what people are.

reply

Indeed, that is precisely what I'm saying. For me, "Representation" is overrated. While it offers some benefits, as you correctly pointed out, the hyperemphasis on it in our contemporary society has led us down a path of absurdity.

reply

I don't entirely agree here. I do think representation is extremely important. I just think that when people talk about 'diversity' they're not being truly serious *unless* that includes diversity of thought, opinion, personality and character.

reply

When I say "overrated", I'm referring to our contemporary society. In the 1950's for example, it was underrated, and today it is overrated. In my opinion, the Goldilocks zone was 80's/90's/00's. During that era, we had a healthy appreciation for the benefits of representation, but we did not yet devolve into madness.

Still pretending to be a staunch Progressive, Harv?
