Yes...this is something my sisters, brother, and I have talked about over the years. To be fair, as others have stated here, I think it's a problem with all forms of entertainment (including sports...although I think sports eventually resolves itself, since there is a "score" and certain level of play one has to keep up to be competitive).

I admit that I really don't know enough about movies and what really makes a great actor/actress. Regarding Tom and Colin Hanks...Colin played a role of a priest in the TV series "Mad Men" and I thought he was very good in it. I really haven't seen him in enough roles to make a judgment on him. Tom seems to be a very popular and well-regarded actor...and I think he can be, when he's in a role that's suited for him. But there have been some roles for him where he has gotten a lot of praise and I don't quite get it. Like "Sully," for example...I thought it was a pretty good movie, but I don't think I ever saw Tom Hanks as Sully. I saw him more as "Tom Hanks playing the role of Sully," if that makes any sense. Same with "Saving Private Ryan"...I thought Tom Sizemore was really the one who carried that movie, not Hanks. I do think Hanks was great in "Forrest Gump" and deserved his Oscar in that role.

It is just very, very, very difficult to "get that foot in the door" without some sort of Hollywood connection, it seems. It takes a lot more than sheer acting ability alone.

I can't see that it really matters in this particular industry - it's not like nepotism in the corporate world or politics where ability really does matter.

reply

unless you are the person who gets pushed aside.

reply

I have such an overall low opinion of Hollywood in general that I really don't care if someone gets pushed aside. The fate of mankind isn't dependent on someone getting or not getting a particular job in that industry.

reply

No. Nepotism has a Hollywood problem.

If you have a parent who might open some doors but the kid has to audition and prove their worth. I don't see anything wrong with that.

BING-BING-BING-BING-BING-BING-BING!

100,000 posts and still going strong!

I like Colin and he is more talented than you think, if you have time and money you share with your children

No, it's true, things are REALLY bad in Hollywood on the Nepotism front, it's gotten to the point where it's almost impossible for actors to hit the big time in Hollywood, without family connections or a family fortune.

I mean acting has run in families as long as there have been straight actors, Drew Barry is a 10th-generation actor give or take a few generations. But now, the big agents are signing Lily Rose Depps and Dakota Johnsons instead of the real talent, and pushing them into major roles they don't deserve, and when their complete lack of talent becomes a problem they panic and look to the UK or Australia for REAL actors with training and talent. Acting in the US has become a closed shop.

i agree, all you need is the right surname.

reply

Unless you're Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson, or Nick Cage, and you don't use the famous surname.

No, what a Nepo Baby really needs is a rich or famous relative telling CAA that the agency needs to do them a small favor.

reply

the media is also at fault here. they give these kids a ton of free press just for being born to famous parents.

reply

That's partly because the Nepo Babies and rich kids can afford top publicists, while those trying to break in on talent alone can't.

Plus, one of the reasons the agencies are signing these talentless twats is because many of them have huge social media followings, because some people like to follow the lives of the children of the rich and famous. The Hollywood Powers That Be think that the following means that more people will pay to see them act, than someone with training and talent.

I don't think anyone would have any idea who Jim Belushi is if it weren't for John.

reply

Same for Joachin Phoenix. He's genuinely talented but seems to be a complete flake, he'd never have broken in on his own!

And neither he nor his brother would be able to break in today.
