He competed with Muhammad Ali for most recognizable, most famous person on the planet. I don't recall when I first heard his name (soccer not being huge in the US, especially when I was a teen in the 1970s) but certainly when he came to play for the NY Cosmos in the summer of 1975. He was unique.

Sad news. I grew up with a bunch of Portuguese neighbors and they were all soccer fanatics and they talked about the man like he was a god. Sad day for soccer fans.

I met him when he visited my elementary school. Very positive and inspirational. His accomplishments will live eternal.
