Lots of clogging performances at state and county fairs in this part of the country.
shareDavid Hoffman's channel is an interesting one to dip into. You could perhaps say, "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.", but I'm not sure that's completely true.

shareThat was great! Both of my parents have Appalachian roots...it's interesting how some of the musicians from that era (Bill Monroe, John Hartford, et.al.) incorporated dancing similar to that while they performed. I don't know how they did it!
Thank you for posting that!
The coolest aspect of it, for me, was how participatory it all was. Other than the old & very young, everyone had a part - playing the music, or dancing. Also, it wasn't an overly-individualistic manner of playing, but a communal one.
I wish I'd gotten into this when I was young.
Yes...when I was in junior high school back in the early 80s, we had dancing for a couple of weeks in gym class that was pretty similar to this. It was a lot of fun and, as you stated, a very "communal" thing.
I remember seeing this on Andrew Zimmerns Show years back. Apparently they are keeping the tradition alive.
