Is cigar smoking an affectation of people who have "made it" ?

I have smoked a few cigars and I thought they were foul, not to mention the way they stink out a place. But you often see the cliched image of the successful man with a big fat stogie in his gob. Look at me, I'm successful !

That's the impression I get. A while back there seemed to be a little clique of Hollywood actors who make a big thing of being seen smoking cigars together - which I thought was a bloody awful example to set their younger fans.
