What did you ladies watch this week? (02/13-02/19)

Where my ladies at? Oh and my boys too, don't worry, I never forget about y'all!

Let's keep the tradition going and share our views of this week.

Mine:

Homefront (2013 TV): How can I still let myself get into those Jason Statham movies? There are a few I didn’t like much but this is a good one. I guess it takes an open mind, some naivety and a passion for action. Anyhow, I felt the thrills of all the wonderful clichés this movie offers. My rating: 7/10

The peanut butter falcon (2019 DVD): The sweetest darn film of the decade. Fantastic - Full of heart and packed with humor. A genuine delight. A wonderful piece of art. Touchant. Winner audience award SXSW 2019. OK I was just reading what’s written on the DVD case but it all applies. Almost… ;) My rating: 7.5/10

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006 TV): Really, really, really funny. I liked it when it came out and I liked it even more on rewatch. I’m not 100% sure but I think this is my favourite Will Ferrell movie. My rating: 7.5/10

Things (1989 tubi): Hum, what was this filmed with, myopia? I don’t know if it’s done on purpose or if it’s because it’s so low budget but my guess is the transfer on tubitv affected the quality because we can barely see the actors facial features which makes it hard to enjoy. Anyhow, let’s pretend we’re in the world where we’re allowed to say that the first minutes of this movie we’re engaging, I have to say that I felt sort of a breeze of reassuring happiness when the girl said “I feel better already”. Then the opening credit starts and what follows is nothing but the opposite from that. The way people laugh and talk and pretty much everything else they do is quite disturbing.
I got one question and one question only: where the fuck was Fred for half the fucking movie!!?? Anyway, I see what they went for; let’s make the worst movie ever made and it will become cult. So, worst sound effects, worst editing, worst acting, worst script… Then what? One of my worst rating: 3/10

Don’t look up (2021 Netflix): I had a fun evening with this one because after my brother recommended to us, I watched it with my parents and my nephew and we drank scotch. As for the movie; I think that once you get the joke and the point it tries to bring, there isn’t much meat left on this bone for us to chew on. I wishes it would’ve been a bit more crazy. Let’s say, half of Wolf of Wall Street craziness would’ve been already good. Fortunately for me there were a few colourful characters that were there to keep me entertained and make me laugh along the way but, i’ll allow myself to use a reviewers cliché; this would’ve worked better as a series episode or even a SNL skit. Not a 2 hour movie. My favourite character: Dr. Oglethorpe. The scotch might be in for something but I think every time that I saw him I had a chuckle. ( I only realized afterward that this was my 2nd Adam McKay movie this week.) My rating: 6/10

Blade runner 2049 (2017 TV): Denis Villeneuve is one of my favourite director and Ryan Gosling is one of the actor I like the least so this one’s a real struggle for me. I only found gosling’s kind of acting good in one movie and it’s Only God forgives. First time I watched Blade runner 2049 I absolutely hated it and rated it 4/10. I try to rewatch it a bit later but just couldn’t get into it yet again and stopped. I still can’t accept the fact that I hated it so I put myself to the (long) task once more. I can now say that I liked things from it but still got many issues, small and big. Small: The giant ballerina in the street, parts of the dialogues (“Girl: so where is this orphanage? Guy: Wanna go for a ride?” “Like, don’t answer my question by another question or I will smack you back into the computer you came from. “ That last part was me. ) Big: The overall tone, pacing, Gosling’s acting, the length, The bad girl having two opportunities to get rid of K but passing on both of them only to be her downfall. The things I liked: the violence (especially when it’s Ryan getting kicked and punched in the face), special effects, the sound, Leto and Ford, the story. So with that said, I can’t bump my rating higher than 5.5/10. Sorry Denis.

Greetings!!
This lady has only seen Homefront, and can't really remember it.

I didn't watch as much this week:

Book of Love 2022 7/10
I thought this was cute. Very predictable, but a sweet rom com. There's really nothing we haven't seen before. That includes Sam Claflin's Spencer Reid's season 4ish hair. Who that's that was a good idea? He's still attractive though. The movie had some real telenovela moments and I really enjoyed that about it. I do rate movies on how much I enjoy watching them and not the quality. I really enjoyed the end. Yes it's cheesy, but sometimes a nice gooey cheese is appreciated.

Rock & Rule 1983 8/10
I was so excited to see that this was on Canadian Prime, only to discover that it was the American version. Oh well.

I have such fond memories of this movie. I recorded it when it debuted on tv and I still have all the songs memorized. It's a silly movie, but it's just a hoot to watch.

Wild Mountain Thyme 2020 7/10
"Do I have to swat at you to get you to sting me?"

I love cheesy romance movies. This was something else. I honestly loved it for it's absurdity. The dialogue, the accents, and even the story outside of the love part were all a little bonkers. It just clicked with me and I won't apologise for liking it.

Learning to Love Again 2020 4/10

I don't mind when a story is used over and over again. I'm just not a fan of when it isn't done well. This wasn't done well.

Found Footage 2011 5/10
Sure the kills were a little disturbing, but over all this was a bit of a bore. Didn't really get any insight into the character, so just witnessing his murders was a little meh. Film was a good length, I was already getting bored with this one so being longer wouldn't have helped the situation much. At least there was a reason for the filming to be happening, which I do appreciate.

The Pact 2012 6/10
So I started watching this thinking that I hadn't seen it before, but I had. I just didn't really remember it. I think I watched it around the same time as Lovely Molly, and Absentia. They all have a similar feel to them although different movies. The film has a great creepy atmosphere and there are some tense suspenseful moments, but for me it's just missing that little bit extra. The cast was good, the story was good, it just wasn't great, or that memorable.

Tangled 2010 8/10
Need a pick me up today and this hit the spot. It's such a fun movie. Probably my favourite movie which features a fight between a man with a frying pan, and a horse with a sword. It's beautifully animated, has some great songs, and is just a feel good movie.

One More Time for the Camera 2014 5/10
Decent idea, and I loved the length. At just over 13 minutes we really didn't have time for too many moments of nothing happening. The acting was pretty bad all around, the gore effects weren't too bad for what I assume is a pretty amateur movie. It was a good effort, cool idea, with mediocre execution.

Video X: The Dwayne and Darla-Jean Story 2003 5/10
I think I'd describe this as a found footage Natural Born Killers without any sort of social commentary. The action wasn't bad, but OMG they were annoying. There was absolutely no reason for this to be as long as it was. They could have easily cut 20 minutes of Darla-Jean either screaming or crying and I would have rated it higher.

Long Way Up 2020 8/10
I'm going to say that I liked this one more than I liked Down. I put this one almost on par with Round. I did enjoy learning about the electric bikes, and I think in every Long Way, the bikes themselves are characters. Most of all though I watch these for Ewan and Charlie. Mostly Ewan's smile, but his whining can get a little ugh. Over all I thought this was fun. Some really beautiful scenery and if they did another one, even if it's a "short way" as they are getting older, I would watch it.

The Faith Community 2017 3/10
I just want my mommmmmm.
Look, I think it's bold to try to make a Found Footage film completely in the daylight. With no supernatural element, the scares in this are totally reliant on the actor's ability to be creepy and convincing. I don't think they succeeded at all. My biggest complaint with almost every single FF I watch is that they don't need to be 90+ minutes. This could have been better if they cut about half the run time.
I give them points for the idea, but not so much the execution. Especially trying to make me vomit at the end with the shaky cam in the trees with the singing and I'm assuming dancing.

Attached: Paranormal 2021 4/10
Found footage movies shouldn't have a score. They just shouldn't. Yeah, okay, the rumble that says "hey look up from whatever else you are doing because something might happen" is somewhat useful when the movie is pretty boring like this one, but....when it's over used it just becomes annoying. When other tones are added in it becomes a score. Now I do wish that my actual life was scored, because how fun would that be? But it's not, so stop making FF movies with it! The acting was okay for the most part, but man did this drag. There really wasn't much to the story, certainly not enough for the runtime. It's not the worst movie of it's type, but it is so typical that there really was nothing to make it stand out.

reply

You still Watched more then me so that’s pretty good.

Tangled: 6.5/10

reply

Why so hard on Tangled?

reply

I saw it at the theatre when it came out and honestly, it did not leave a big impression on me.

Strange thing is I often am underwhelmed when I go to the theatre but when I watch the same movie at home I like it more.🤷‍♂️

reply

I wasn't wooed by it the first time I saw it either come to think of it. It's really grown on me.

reply

i'm really looking forward to catching rock & rule too. i remember watching it on tv when i was a kid & not quite understanding it, but still enjoying it a lot. i also had the comic adaptation and read that a lot, even though the idea of a comic adaptation of a musical is a bit silly.

i didn't realize there was such a thing as a canadian version. are they just different edits?

reply

Omar is voiced by a different actor, the music sounds better in Canadian, and the end is just slightly different. It's not a big deal. I just really like the music, so sounding more full is better for me.

reply

i'm sorry for kinda putting the ball in motion that led to you watching things. i'll have to make that up to you somehow.

(but i still love it...5/5).

reply

It's all good, most of your recommendations were great and I won't hesitate to watch more of them still.

And somehow, even if I didn't like it, I feel glad that I did watch it. It is quite a phenomenon.

reply

And... where was Fred? I wish we saw more of him...

I just remember a scene where he says he's going to check on the girl then we only see him again near the end of the movie.

reply

ha, i don't even attempt to make sense out of that movie. i just love wading into its incompetence.

the red letter media review of it is pretty fun, if you ever feel like checking it out. i left a comment on it, and the director of things responded!

reply

Yo, it's me,your boy!

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby 8/10
Don’t look up 9/10
Blade runner 2049 9/10

I watched:

My Bloody Valentine 1981 7/10 Rewatched the unrated cut on blu ray. An entertaining, well made slasher.

Frozen in Love 2018 8/10 I really enjoyed this one. I liked the chemistry between the leads and it was cute and charming.

C.H.U.D. 1984 6/10 This was decent, but I thought it would be better and more fun.

Who Saw Her Die? 1972 7/10 An effective and interesting Giallo film.

All Things Valentine 2016 7/10 This had an interesting storyline and I liked the performances from the leads. Also, the doggy was cute.

I Am a Ghost 2012 8/10 Very interesting twist on the typical ghost story. Instead of focusing on the living, this film focuses on the ghost. I thought it was very well done and had some cool moments.

The Corruption of Chris Miller 1973 7/10 An entertaining and satisfying thriller.

Written on the Wind 1956 7/10 This looks good and has fine performances, but I didn't find it as engrossing or entertaining as I would have hoped.

Devil Times Five 1974 7/10 A fun and entertaining killer kids movie. If you love evil children as much as I do, then you will want to check this out!

Bell, Book and Candle 1958 6/10 This was a mildly amusing romantic comedy with pretty good performances.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 5/10 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is mediocre and unnecessary. The characters and story are underdeveloped. The film isn't very fun or scary or thrilling. It isn't much of anything and feels mostly pointless. There are a couple good moments, but not enough to make this worthwhile.

Eat, Play, Love 2017 8/10 This was really cute and sweet.

Love Blossoms 2017 6/10 This was alright, but not as good as some of the other Hallmark films.

The Wedding Veil Legacy 2022 6/10 This was just okay, not as good as the first two films in the trilogy.

reply

I am planning to watch Texas chainsaw massacre this week but I don’t know anymore no one seem to really like it…

reply

Watch Hellbender instead.

Netflix?

It's on Shudder.

Pinning a spot for later.

And here we go!

The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) - Indeed a very sweet and wholesome story. Shia LaBeouf delivers an impressive turn as the drifter who becomes the main character's friend and mentor. One of those smaller scale movies that leaves a tender lasting impression. 8

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) - I remember having a good time when this initially came out, but it's the type of comedy that I hesitate to view again because a lot of the humor depends on the shocking outrageousness of it all. Maybe enough time has passed that I'll revisit it soon. 7

Things (1989) - What, you don't store your jacket in the freezer? Fundamental flaws notwithstanding, it's a peculiar piece of outsider art. 4

Don't Look Up (2021) - I'm not all that enticed by comedies with very few actual comedic actors. Just can't see myself having a good time. No rating.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) - Visually stunning with some neat nods to the predecessor. Somewhat overlong and navel-gazing especially towards the end. Would've enjoyed more with Dave Bautista's sympathetic character, but it's pretty cool that he got his own short film. 7

The short, "2048, Nowhere to Run" - https://youtu.be/aZ9Os8cP_gg

And my week:

Moonlighting Season 1 (1985 TV) - Never got around to this before, but having recently listened to the podcast Haileywood, I decided to take the plunge. I can definitely see why this was Bruce Willis' breakout role. He gets a lot of screen time to show off his charisma and verbal wit - and boy do those quips come flying. Some of his lines are so sharp and off the cuff that I had to pause to get the laughs out of my system. Cybill Shepherd is able to hold her own as the "straight man" of the pair, but it's without a doubt Bruno's show. Looking forward to the next season. 7

Peacemaker Season 1 finale (2022 TV) - Gunn sticks the landing with a pretty kooky season closer. 8

Subway (1985) - One of Luc Besson's early features is an oddball thriller with kinetic camerawork and a thick air of suspense. 7

The Wendy Kerby Valentine's Day Special (2022) - This is one of the most twisted comedies that I've seen in a while. Gregg Turkington has some choice moments, but Holy heck. This gets into some super dark comedy. 9

The Wrong Guy (1997) - A madcap farce with some great Hitchcock-inspired gags. Clearly a lot of love went into this. 7

Taking Tiger Mountain (1983) - A twisted experimental sci-fi meditation featuring Bill Paxton in a very - shall we say - revealing role. Worth watching for his line delivery. 6

Licorice Pizza (2021) - It's nearing the end of its run, so I opted to see it in an empty theater the other night. What a treat. I had a hunch going in that it would be enjoyable, but even so I was not prepared for what unfolded. PTA is already a stellar filmmaker, and here he outdoes himself in this beautifully shot atmospheric character study. I did not expect to like this as much as I did. Might just be the best movie of 2021. 10

Movies

- Look Who's Talking (1989)
Why did I watch this movie? I'm not exactly sure, I guess because nothing else was on.🤷‍♀️ Watching it today it seems rather dated and strange with some of the adult jokes.

TV Series

-Monk - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

reply

I know why you watched it. Because I watched it last week or the one before and I said it was still very good and charming and the chemistry between the two lead was irresistible. 7/10

reply

So your mind control powers finally work!

peanut butter falcon - 4/5 very good natured and sweet. haven't seen it since the theatres - need to revisit.
things is perfect and i won't have anyone tell me otherwise! 5/5
blade runner 2049 - i get where you're coming from (though i have no problem with gosling, & often really like him), but i give it a great rating solely based on sound and vision. it's just a great, booming movie with immersive visuals and massive sound. 4.5/5

my week:

EARLY SUMMER (1951) 4/5 i believe this is my 7th ozu, & i have to say there is a sameness to them that makes it kinda hard for me to tell them apart. i mean...they're all good/great, in the way they depict adults making choices, tinged with hope & sadness & acceptance of the futility of life & all that.

they're all very very good. but they're all kinda the same, aren't they?

(pls don't yell at me for saying that).

THE STYLIST (2021) 4/5 i kinda loved this.
it's glossy & slick & ...well...stylish, as you'd expect. & the lead gives a cool, sexy & crazy performance.

the only thing i might criticize is that i wish it had gone a little wilder & more brutal at times - the whole movie kinda simmers, rather than ever going full boil. but it's really well done & i think this may be something i'm going to enjoy going back to many times.

RED ROCKET (2021) 5/5 nobody makes down on their luck & possibly despicable characters more sympathetic & appealing than sean baker imo.

you can understand why people fall under this guy's spell, even as you're yelling internally 'get away from him!'

better than tangerine, not as good as florida project is my back of the envelope immediately out of the theatre evaluation.

edit - coming back a few days later to increase my rating, mainly because the film has been rattling around in my head & making me think for 2 solid days, & i love it when movies do that to me.

FUBAR (2002) 3.5 'i was under a lot of anesthetic when they said 'what else do you want done...''

hahahahaha.

i once said on this very site that things was the most canadian movie i'd ever seen. this is the new king of the hill.

THE KAOS BRIEF (2016) 2.5 found footage.
kids are tormented by men in black after seeing ufos.
it's ok. certainly not great. but not awful.
there is no tension & zero scares.
the girl is cute.

2 JENNIFER (2016) 3 found footage sequel to the not great imo original.

i liked it. better than the first one, anyway. it's not especially well done, but it had some surprises and i like the way the story unfolded. maybe i'm easy to fool, but i didn't expect this to go the way it did.

the lead's the worst thing about it, i'd say. if he'd been a bit more convincing as a filmmaker or as a threat, this would have come across much more effectively. but i'm still putting my opinion down on this not being terrible at all.

SAFETY LAST (1923) 4 this guy is the g-rated version of mikey from red rocket.

funny movie.

SAVAGE THREE (1975) 3.5 oe dallesandro & friends go on a killing spree. pretty fun. it's violent & sleazy, though it could have used a bit more of that.

A GHOST WAITS (2020) 3.5 solidly ok low budget paranormal thing about a guy falling for a ghost. it gets a bit too sappy at the end and tries for some emotions that it doesn't quite pull off imo, but it's absolutely not cookie cutter or like everything else you've seen.

i really did not like the music at the end.

but i have to give it proper marks for a really solid effort overall.

#FROM JENNIFER (2017) 3.5 i am very pleasantly surprised & maybe a little shocked at how much i've enjoyed these silly 'jennifer' movies.

this has some genuine laughs, a bit of solid gore, and a fairly coherent story.

doesn't have any real scares or goth girls or night vision camera work or any of the things that make ff films really work for me.

but i had a very good time watching it. i won't say no to that.

RADIO ON (1979) 3.5 it's like an early jim jarmusch movie, but british. the 20 year old me would have loved it, with all the kraftwerk & berlin era bowie & such. & i liked it today, but the entire time i kinda wished i was watching mystery train or something like that.

it's very bleak, as you might expect from a british film from this era. it's definitely lacking in that jarmusch style dry wit & charm.

HOTEL POSEIDON (2021) 5 this is definitely one of the ugliest movies i've ever seen. whether that's something you want to experience i'll leave to your best judgement, but whoever made this went out of their way to make something ugly to look at, and they absolutely nailed it.

whatever it is and regardless of why it was made, it's one of the best movies ever made when it comes to making me feel uncomfortable.

THE DOCUMENTARY (2017) 3.5 pretty well done mockumentary.
not quite top-tier, but it's really well shot and genuinely creepy in parts and pretty well acted.
i can see this being something i'll come back to again.

reply

THE JOKESTERS (2015) 2.5 found footage that is probably most notable for basically working like a comedy for it's first hour or so. not a very funny comedy, and it's sorta annoying in that all the guys are obnoxious youtube/fratboy types. but it's not dull.

the action, when it does finally come, is pretty generic stuff too i guess.

unless you're compelled like i am to watch every ff film you can find, you can probably skip it. it's not bad enough or good enough to stand out.

THE MOVEMENT OF THINGS (1985) 3.5 90 minutes of watching portugese people milk cows & sing & go to church and shuck corn & so on. it's all very nice and good and relaxing to hang out with these perfectly nice people. not really sure why any of this footage exists or why someone edited it into a movie but i'm not unhappy that i watched it.

BULLET BALLET (1998) 3.5 i went into this completely blind, knew nothing about it other than the fact it had a pretty nice letterboxd rating.

and about 1/2 way through, i said to myself 'this has to be the tetsuo guy.'

so every once in a while, i recognize the obvious.

like tetsuo, i appreciate this while not really liking it much. it has that same steely industrial feel. it's grey and grim and menacing and joyless. i'm all in on the craft, but i can't deny that after about 50 minutes of this stuff, i'm pretty checked out.

would make a great short film, i bet. at 90 minutes, i get pretty worn out.

THE SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR (1975) 3.5 pretty fun. i see a lot of praise for the rollercoaster shootout, and maybe that's right, but i thought the car chase before that was even better.

& i never care about car chases. i think they're boring generally. but this one seemed absolutely crazy & incredibly dangerous. it feels like they put people's lives in serious danger when they shot that segment.

the movie overall is solidly neat - not as trashy as i would have liked, but it's reliably entertaining, and worth watching for those two great chases alone.

THEY'RE WATCHING (2016) 3.5 again, letterboxd with your 2.7 rating, i find myself wondering just what it is you want out of a movie.

this isn't perfect, or even really good, but it's solidly above average. not just for a found footage film. it's above average in general. it meanders a bit too much in the first hour, granted. but it's solidly well acted, has a coherent story, and has some nice looking women.

and when it finally kinda takes off in the last 20 minutes, it's completely fun. the effects are silly, but for a low budget film they are not badly done at all.

i liked it quite a bit.

WELCOME 2 THE TERRORDONE (1995) 3.5 my thoughts are very ... scrambled on this, i guess. i hate it in some ways, found it grating and obnoxious to listen to, with its rough public enemy-inspired songs mixed with enya sounding sappy tracks.

and its message felt like so much of the strident victimization narrative so common now, and i just don't think is right. it's understandable. but i think it's wrong. i am influenced by jason riley & thomas sowell & john mcwhorter and glenn loury in that way, and i think there is an ugly belief behind this movie that i don't think is based in reality. it's based in anger and resentment.

but it as a bold movie telling a story, even if it's a story i think is wrong-headed, it's very well done in some ways. it's very very rough and low budget, but it's incredibly ambitious and audacious and you have to respect that. even if i don't respect the message or the intent, i respect the effort and the style.

and it's not really like anything i've seen before, and i always appreciate that.

TALE OF CINEMA (2005) 3.5 i can't think of a single thing to say about this.
i was really confused by it, but in a fun, offbeat way.
it was short.
cute girls.
little bit of nudity.

BLOOD MOUNTAIN (2017) 3 pretty entertaining. using helmet-mounted cameras made for some very jittery footage, but the movie's solid fun imo.

FOR JENNIER (2020) 1.5 how many of these bloody jennifer movies are there???
i guess i'm obligated to watch all of them. in for a penny, etc...
though i've studied enough econ to grok the sunk cost fallacy.
anyway, this is bad. 2+3 were fun, but this is the pits.
it has nothing. no nudes. no decent gore. no tension.

I WAS BORN BUT... (1932) 3.5 this is a very nice movie.

THE POSSESSED (1965) 4 pretty good!

a moody mystery that won't bowl you over with surprise when you find out what was going on, but it has a very neat look and style & a cool score.

the lead is a good lookin' rascal, and the girls are all sexy.

i enjoyed it a lot.

CAPTURED (2020) 3.5 pretty fun. it's predictable, and has a twist that you're gonna see coming at least 30 minutes before the end probably, but it's fairly slickly made and the lead has a cool punk/goth look that i really enjoyed.

reply

AGAINST THE NIGHT (2017) 2.5 sexy teens walk around an asylum. surprisingly not awful. needed more night vision & more scares, but what's here is watchable & in places reasonably tense. also had a nice little bit of nudity. needed more of that too, but i'm happy for what i was given. glass half full and all that.

THE HIDDEN FORTRESS (1958) 4.5 i am kinda shocked at how much i enjoyed this.

to date, my kurosawa experience has been a bit joyless, tbh. respect for the movies, certainly, but i can't really say i loved any of them or wanted to watch them again. rashomon & seven samurai are sort of my personal definition of 'watch this it's good for you' prestige cinema that always seems to bore me a little.

but this was just great. and fun. the scene where that guy was miming taking the horses for a drink was genuinely lol funny.

if it had been a bit shorter and tidier in its pace, i would call it perfect.

THE INNOCENTS (2016) 3 it tells its sad and important story very dutifully and mournfully. it's fine. it's nicely scored with sad music and everyone is very pensive and mopey.

there's nothing wrong with it, and i'm sure everyone who made it poured all they have into it, but for a film filled with so many miserable, tragic elements, i'm kinda mystified at how unemotional and glacial it is.

i appreciate it when movies understate things and don't go overboard on manipulation, but this feels like it may have gone a few degrees too far in trying to correct for that.

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2022) 2 i feel like elsie fisher's dad from eighth grade would be very disappointed she wound up here.

this has one great, brutal kill (repeated axe to the head) that i enjoyed quite a bit.

nothing else in it is half as great, but ... it's got a few other moments of fun gore. nothing particularly memorable, but it scores a solid par on that front.

it's a middling slasher. it has a bit of a budget, so the kills all look good. it's a bit too clean and glossy looking perhaps.

i liked it more than the 2013 tcm & leatherface, but not as much as the films from the 00s.

***edit - someone on twitter just reminded me that this contains the line 'behold the wonders of late stage capitalism' and i just have to dock this a half star for that alone.

WHO SAW HER DIE (1972) 3 great opening, solid first half, but i have to say this movie lost its grip on me in the last 40 minutes or so. and that repeated score started to drive me a bit batty after a while.

not terrible, but a bit too languid for my mental state today, perhaps.

WEKUFE (2016) 3 takes a bit too long to get its motor running, really. like a lot of ff films, it has our characters acting as documentarians on a strange case, but this setup really doesn't have a lot of building of momentum.

but the ending is fine. and it's short. & it's chilean if you like the idea of watching something from there.

BEHIND THE SIGHTINGS (2021) 3.5 i know how this makes me look, but i believe in honesty.

i liked this quite a bit. tbh i enjoyed this more than any ozu or tarkovsky movie i've watched.

i would take this over almost anything on the sight and sound 250.

I’m glad you enjoyed Fubar! If you can get your hands on the sequel I think it’s worth watching too.

I rate both 8 and 7.5

I haven’t seen a single one of yours but definitely some that I’m gonna look up.

Red Rocket is definitely a movie that sticks with you. One choice I really enjoyed was how we never get a clear picture of why Mikey has returned home, but over the course of the movie my mind was spiraling into any number of potential trainwreck scenarios.
