Movies Everybody Loves

There's good movies, bad movies, masterpieces, shitty movies and such. And then there's movies everybody loves.

My two pennies:

■ The Princess Bride. I think this is THE movie everyone loves. As somebody else here quoted recently: it does have something for everyone. Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles. And MLT.

■ Jaws and early Spielberg movies in general. Talking about 70s/80s greatest pop-corns: while Star Wars is very popular, there's quite a few people who don't like them. But it's hard to find somebody who doesn't like Jaws or the first Indie Jones.

■ Toy Story and early Pixar movies.

■ Similar to Pixar: classic Ghibli movies. Hard to find somebody who doesn't like Spirited Away. And I would add to that list non-Ghibli Makoko Shinkai's top movie Your Name (2016). He has become the most popular Anime director since Miyazaki.

■ ¿Amelie? It became extremely popular, but I knew a few people who found it too sugary.

I feel curious. Opinions? Agreement or Disagreement? What movies would you suggest?

That's a good list but I have to admit I started My Cousin Vinny recently and lost interest part way through. I remember loving the film but it's not aged well.

Your innocence makes me smile. This is Movie Chat. Have you not ever encountered the 'overrated / boring / am I the only one' genre of trolling?

How it works...

i. Pick a movie that is hugely popular, ideally one whose popularity has stood for decades.

ii. Start your thread with the title "Overrated","Boring" or "Am I the Only One? (who found this movie stupid/ boring/ overrated).

iii. Stand back and watch as your troll-trap drags in the usual defenders who can't resist rising to the bait and unnecessarily defending the movie.

iv. Eventually the thread descends into personal insults or politics. Usually both.

The Princess Bride is just okay to have on when there's nothing else on tv.

Jaws is cool, but most Spielberg movies suck. I like the concept of Indiana Jones, but not the movies themselves.

Not a fan of Ghibli either. I do not like the animation style (which is ALWAYS the same) and it's just trying to be quirky for the sake of being quirky.

Amélie just isn't my thing. Not just too sugery, but too manufactured. It tries too hard to be a "modern fairy tale". And Audrey Tatou and her face are just annoying.
