New ABBA music not selling

Not surprising. I don't think McCartney's or AC/DC albums sold that well. People just want the old hits.

The article focuses on physical sales, downloads and radio play, three measurements of success that are less and less important with each passing year. A quick look at Spotify reveals the picture for Abba's new material is not quite as dreary as the author would have us believe. They also hit the top of streaming charts with their new songs a couple of months ago.

Whether their numbers are in line with their expectations, I can't say. I don't know what those expectations were. And it's certainly true that their new material has not reached the heights of their heyday. But that would always have been unlikely. And 'not selling' in an age of streaming doesn't mean a great deal.

I wonder if they are sold on vinyl. πŸ˜€

Or better: cassetes.

Probably not the best examples:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCartney_III

McCartney III performed strongly across a number of international charts. The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart on 25 December 2020, marking his first number-one solo album in his home country in 31 years (since 1989's Flowers in the Dirt). The album reached the top spot by selling 33,079 album-equivalent units.[27] The album also reached the top 10 of many other European markets.

In the US, the album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 107,000 equivalent album units – of which 104,000 were album sales – behind Taylor Swift's Evermore.[28] The placement earned McCartney the feat of being the first artist to have a new album in the top two chart positions in each of the last six decades.[28] McCartney III was also the top-selling album in its debut week in the US, outselling Swift's Evermore and Eminem's Music to Be Murdered By – Side B in pure sales (not including equivalent album units).[29] The album also recorded the third largest US vinyl sales week since Nielsen SoundScan tracking era began in 1991.

Worldwide it was the 6th best selling album of 2020 with 1.37 million copies sold.

reply

number one in album sales don't mean that much today.

reply

EVEN I HAVE TO AGREE WITH THAT...BEING NUMBER ONE IN ALBUM SALES JUST MEANS YOU SOLD A COUPLE THOUSAND COPIES AND YOU KNOW AT LEAST THAT MANY OF YOUR FANS ARE STILL ALIVE.

reply

album sales are just not what they were.

reply

You know what's worse than ABBA? Ace of Base.

reply

Totally different genre.

reply

Ace of Base is basically ABBA of the 90s.

reply

I LIKE ACE OF BASE.

reply

I'm sorry.

reply

I,M NOT.

reply

Because it wasn't that good. We don't care who they are, they need to still have good music.

reply

Or maybe they were good just not in the popular genre nowadays. Or they were never good in the first place, just that the genre was the one that's popular back then.

reply

Actually their music was so good that they broke through being considered has beens like most who win the Eurovision Song Contest.

reply

I heard the new ABBA songs. I didn't think they were very good.

No disrespect. I am a fan of ABBA. Love their music from the 70s and early 80s!

reply

The album is supposed to be released in November though this year. Wait and see.

reply

The US isn't the world.

ABBA's upcoming new album has already notched over 100,000 pre-orders in the UK. Their first week sales are going to be big. A lot of their fans will buy it release week and in the weeks leading up to Christmas. No one can expect their singles to do massive numbers on Spotify. However, Don't Shut Me Down did peak in the top 10 in 11 countries, not bad going for a band whose members are in their 70s. Elton John can only get hits if he piggybacks on big pop stars like Dua Lipa.
