I heard about this in a doc about Escobar
Hippos are deadly, aggressive behomoths as well as being bad for the local flora
I've heard they are far deadlier than almost any African animal as well!
They look so cute, but NO petting and snuggles☠️
and eating everything in sight.
shareCartoons made it worse. I don't think there is a talking animal cartoon that depicted a hippo as a dangerous animal. Crocodiles, hyenas, tigers, even bears and bees are often shown as dangerous (or worse, villainous,) but never a hippo. They're always peaceful, calm and jolly good natured animals in cartoons.

Hippos are probably my favorite zoo animal. I just love them, but yes they can be very dangerous. They have no natural predators in Columbia and water aplenty to thrive in. (The African dry season/droughts can check their population.)
They have become a local attraction and many people don't want them killed. Sterilization is an answer but will prove difficult. I hope they are successful at that rather than killing them.
they have found their garden of eden.

Thank you, this is one of the weirdest stories of the last decade and I'm always happy for an update.
Yeah, now that it's comparatively safe to visit Columbia the tourists are flocking there, and the tourists want to see the hippos in the wild.
Fun Fact:
Hippos can sleep submerged and come up for air without waking up.

Can't they just cull and feed them to the lions or tigers in the zoo if they're endangering the environment? Animals eat other animals all the time, it's natural. And carnivorous zoo animals need to be fed meat anyway.
Sterilizing hippos is the one that's unnatural.
The zoo isn't your personal gladiator ring. Also these are basically wild hippos, there's a good chance they would win vs a captive lion or tiger.
shareWho said the zoo is my personal gladiator ring? What a nonsense reply.
They can simply shoot the hippos first, slaughter / butcher them, then give the meat to carnivorous zoo animals. Nobody mentioned gladiator nor animal fight and who will win. What are you talking about?
My point was why bother strerilizing the hippos? If they're endangering the environment, why don't they simply cull them?
Go home. You're drunk.
i guess they are trying to keep the numbers at a manageable level.
