New balls please.

an easy win

Born in Toronto and left at age 2. That's a 0.11% win for Canada.

reply

They couldn't have scripted it better !

reply

good for her.
i heard her parents couldn't be there because of travel restrictions, which is really a bit of a shame.

reply

Its been 44 years since a Brit last won a tennis US Open, since they don't do parades how will they honor her?

Well, Andy Murray had to win a couple of grand slam tournaments before we gave him him a knighthood. But she'll probably get awarded a CBE. Which will mean a nice day out to see the Queen to get a medal hung around her neck.

And she is a shoo-in for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, both for her sporting achievement and for actually appearing to have a personality.

So, er, don't worry - parade or not - people will definitely be making a fuss of her.

reply

So success will not spoil her? She will not get wild and run with the rich and famous?

reply

No idea.

It'd spoil me. If I'd been dedicating myself to knocking a ball about since I was a child and won a grand slam tournament at my second attempt, age 18, I'd probably sack it off and go out and party for the next twenty years. But this probably partially explains why I'm not a professional sportsperson. They tend to have a bit more focus, don't they?

reply

Probably with a nice cup of tea.

Last British U.S Open Male Singles Champion - Andy Murray 2012 (9 years)

Last British U.S Open Female Singles Champion before Emma Raducanu - Virginia Wade 1968 (53 years)

Raducanu is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam trophy since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977 (44 years).

reply

My bad and apologize to Sir Andrew Murray. I read wikipedia too quickly.

reply

Would you believe that Andy Murray's 2012 win made him the first British U.S Open Men's Champion since Fred Perry in 1936 (76 years)?

reply

When Russell Crowe's Max Skinner opted to be Fred Perry in A Good year I never realized he had to go so far back to find a British champion.
