What did you noobs watch this week? (08/15-08/21)

What up noob. I just finished another week of vacation and did some golf, climbing, boat... Not too many movies though. What did you do?

Snatchers (2019 DVD): “After status-obsessed teen Sara has sex for the first time, she wakes up the next day nine months pregnant-with an alien”. This is light entertainment if you like the genre. Low budget but solid results. The highlight for me was the mom; she overplayed her role with perfection. And those big eyes!! Then ending felt rushed but overall, not a bad flick. My rating: 6.5/10

Thirst (2009 DVD): In the beginning there’s a virus and a vaccine; movies like that are just too familiar these days. It doesn’t take away the fact that this movie is beautifully shot, has great direction, a perfect cast and the story was fucking sick. I can be a sick fuck sometimes. Although I have to admit, somethings bothered me; I don’t mind seeing them drink blood because I know it’s fake but the foot and armpit fetish… that’s a big no-no for me. Otherwise one of the great vampire flicks out there with a few WTF moments here and there. I actually said WTF out loud at least a few times. My rating: 8.5/10

Berserk (2019 Tubi):” A movie star and his unsuccessful friend are desperately trying to finish a new script for a zombie film. When a psychedelic trip leads to an accidental death, the friends must keep their cool as they try to figure out the best way to hide the body.” One of the best movie I saw about someone blowing someone else’s buzz. Confession time: when Nick Cannon became the host of America got talent I started liking him a lot. Plus they managed to do some pretty trippy scenes with this film which I also enjoyed a lot! I have a feeling that if you enjoyed spring breakers you will enjoy this movie too although I would rewatch this one 10 times before I rewatch spring breakers. My rating: 7/10

Caboose (1996 TV): Interesting story, boring film. Provocative scenes that fail to shock. Good cast that we’re at their beginnings. My rating: 5/10

i caught the trailer for annette this afternoon before zola. it's opening here next weekend - i was likely going to go anyway, but since it's got the allaby stamp of approval, i'll almost definitely catch it now.

reply

I will be curious to see what you think of Annette. It's quite the film and I would recommend not reading about it first. The less you know about the film going into it, the better the experience.

reply

Me neither.

Nine Days (2020)

I was cautiously optimistic about this film, but man, was I ever disappointed. Preachy, pretentious, no real point, and a
very confusing and abrupt ending.

6.5.

🙁

reply

i'm very intrigued by this movie.
the descriptions make it sound very interesting.
not yours, mind you.
but everyone else's.
jonah goldberg, i writer i like & admire a lot, devoted an entire podcast episode to it.
not playing here yet, but if it shows up i'm definitely down for checking it out.

That's what I thought before I saw it, but Hey, go for it, dude! BTW, did you read his book Liberal Fascism?

😎

reply

i read it years ago. have to admit it's mostly fallen from my head.

i enjoyed his recent book 'suicide of the west' quite a bit.

I have not read that one.

Captain Marvel (2019 Disney Plus) 6/10. This film relies heavily on Larson's portrayal of the character and frankly she is not very good. I have seen her in other things and I have had no problem with her in the past. However here she is just miscast, most of the quips and attempts at humor fall flat. She simply lacks the charisma of most of her peers in the MCU. On top of that, the film felt long, I didn't care for the characterizations of the skrulls, and Captain Marvel is a bit overpowered for the villains she was facing, so by the end of the film there isn't much at stake because their is no serious threat to her. I did enjoy Jackson and the cat though.

I had a lot of fun watching it. 7.5/10

Raised by Wolves (2020 HBO Max) - One of the most disappointing Sci-Fi content I've consumed in a while. Don't know why I had high expectations. It's a Sci-Fi project by Ridley Scott. Should've learnt my lesson by now. Started out promising but it just fell apart.

It's not bad, it's just so meh. The plot just meanders about. There's no point to anything. I feel like I wasted so much time watching something better. Would not recommend. 4/10

It's always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005) - I fell off a few years ago. Season 13 wasn't as good, so I just gave up. Glad I picked it up again. Cause season 14 was back to basics. It's got a bunch of "Classic Sunny" episodes. Solid & consistent season. 8/10

I haven’t got the chance to see S11 or any other one after. Too expensive.

Thirst - 7/10

First half was way better

Stillwater (2021) - Damon was great but the plot was lacking. A twist at the end and then the movie ends abruptly. Does not make France look look good at all. 6.5/10

Good Morning, Vietnam (1988) - This is a vehicle to showcase Robin Williams comedic talent. He is hilarious. Nice touch of reality makes it very good. 7.5/10

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) - A ghost detective movie. I thought it was kind of boring. This franchise has played out. 6/10

The Old Man and the Sea (1958) - You can help but nor like this movie even though it was done on the cheap. Most of the boat scenes were done in a water tank. Spencer Tracy is great and well deserved of his Oscar nom. 7/10

The Devil's Candy (2017) - A small independent movie but it is surprisingly watchable. I liked the twist on the demonic possession angle. Liked the ending. 7/10
