What's the worst flavor of jelly bean?

I don't eat sweets often, but my niece and nephew left some Jelly Belly brand jelly beans here, it said "40 flavors" on the bag, so I tried them. They all ranged in flavor from "not bad" to "quite good", until I got to one that was downright disgusting. I thought it must have been an anomaly, because no one could possibly like that flavor. A good name for it would be "bad breath", and I could feel it in my nose. I kept eating them, hoping to eradicate that foul taste from the back of my throat and nose, and eventually I got another one just like it, which means it probably wasn't an anomaly. I don't know what "flavor" they were supposed to be; I wasn't paying attention to the colors, but it wasn't the black licorice flavor that I know a lot of people don't like. I'm not a huge fan of black licorice flavor, but neither do I have a problem with it.

That was about four hours ago and I can still sense it slightly in my nose and throat, even though I've gargled with water, drank a Coke, brushed my teeth, and ate two "Fireball" subs and half a bag of "Flamin' Hot" Cheetos.

I'm not a fussy eater at all; I can't even remember the last time I ate something I thought tasted bad. For that matter, not counting certain alcoholic beverages, I can't remember ever eating or drinking something I thought tasted bad. I've eaten things that were bland or too salty or whatever, but not outright bad like those jelly beans.

black licorice.

I know a lot of people who can't stand black licorice. I've never been able to understand it. I think it's delicious.

Must be one of those gene things. It's anise right? Isn't the Greek drink Oozo made out of similar ingredients?

reply

Anise is one of the flavors in it. Yes.

Could be right about the genes. Everyone tells me how sweet and delicious strawberries are. Unfortunately I'm allergic and as a result I am repulsed by them. I do realize that's a defense mechanism and not the same thing.

Interesting.

I don't get it either. For myself, I wouldn't go so far as to call black licorice delicious, but I like it better than the ho-hum flavors that mostly just taste sweet with not much else going on flavor-wise. I rank it below flavors that are tart/sour though; I've always liked those the best, whether in candy form or natural form. For example, I love lemons, rhubarb, certain types of green apples, and those spear-shaped sorrel leaves.
