In Hindsight, Did You Think You Would Be Making MORE Money Today?

Maybe you had certain expectations or plans years ago (or recently) but for reasons you list, did you expect to make more money? I'm not trying to include the pandemic, so feel free to use 2019 as "today".

reply

No - I certainly over achieved and it's not necessarily because I had some grand plan, because I didn't. I was however always in the right place at the right time and was good at networking, so all of my jobs after college were the results of someone approaching me with job offers.

Yeah of course, but Trump f'ed our world to hell. The last 4 years were the worst 4 years in the past 30 years.

reply

How so? Did you forget about W. already?

reply

YES...BECAUSE IT TURNED OUT THAT DESPITE A HIGH IQ AND VARIETY OF THINGS I WAS GOOD AT...BEING A DAD IS WHAT I AM BEST AT...AND THEY DON'T PAY YOU FOR THAT....AT LEAST NOT IN MONEY.

reply

No - I have been blessed and I appreciate just how lucky I've been.

i am astonished every day that i am not living on main street giving hand jobs for spare change. mind-boggling.

probably sounds like an exaggeration, but honestly, if you would have pegged one person as being doomed to complete and utter failure, it would have been me.

that i have money in the bank is a tribute to the glories of free markets and free trade, the things that allow a person as completely bereft of most abilities as i am to hone in on a few select talents and use those to make a go of things.

all hail capitalism, i say.

so yeah, i am absolutely delighted and amazed that i have what i have.

i actually could be making a lot more money right now almost certainly, but i much prefer having a stress free job and lots of spare time to ride my bike & read & watch trashy movies. priorities and all that.

Honestly, I think this could be anybody. All it takes is one bad investment, a job loss, a house burning down, someone screwing you over, getting into a serious accident and not being able to take care of yourself and many other reasons. I've always felt anybody who isn't living on the street has been lucky in their lives.

reply

not to be annoying, but i am going to push back just a little bit against that. in doing so i'm probably gonna contradict my own comment above, but i was kinda joking when i said it anyway.

most people have a lot of social capital in their lives. some have just a bit, a lucky few have a lot.

almost everyone has some family who would be there to help them, who would never let them live on the streets. they have a few friends who would spot them a few months rent or give them a couch to sleep on while they get things together.

& i have some of that, & i definitely leaned on it when i was younger & am grateful for the people who were nice to me when they didn't have to be.

i have some behavioral problems that i won't bore you with that mean i have a lot less of that stuff than most people, but it was there for me when i needed it!

the people who do end up on the streets are either the truly unlucky who never had any kind of backstop in their life, no one to help them when they needed it, or have the kinds of problems that meant the help they had was all used up.

reply

I understand, but what I'm saying is that there is still a lot of luck involved. If I fell onto hard times, I'm lucky my parents would be around to help. But when they're gone, I don't have faith in any other family member helping.

reply

understood & agreed.

No complaints here

Some folks say that the glory goes to heroes but us orphans, bastards and oddballs often pull off a proper landing

reply

Yes. I was doing very well, on a steady upward trajectory, when I left the job to start my own business. Didn't work out.

reply

At least you tried...

Personally, I'd rather make less, but not have to work for anyone.

reply

For what it's worth that takes a big pair to walk away from a sure thing and launch a venture on your own

You have guts man, full points to you for taking the shot

reply

Thanks, that's very kind of you to say.

reply

Never been all that ambitious and given my upbringing, I have exceeded all my expectations.
