Why don't I get high when I take opioids?

I do not get a feeling of euphoria when I take them.

you're not taking enough. maybe quadruple your 'fix' and see if that helps.

People have varying degrees of tolerance to stimulants and depressors. I'm about the smallest one of my friends and I can drink hard liquor in greater quantities and be less inebriated than them. Pain medication doesn't even do much for me.

Yeah, I broke my leg last month and have had a couple of surgeries before this, one very painful and that required a few days on a dilaudid PCA. So I had some painkillers, several different kinds, and none of the resulting sensations were fun, not something I'd want to duplicate on my own time. Alcohol made me feel much better, all warm and relaxed and happy - at least at first, then it was embarrassing sloppy drunk and I am better off without that crap in my life (sober 15 years).

Either people experience the effects of these drugs differently, and the effect of these drugs is much more pleasurable for other people than for me, or some people are so desperate to escape reality that they'll take anything that alters their brain chemistry even a little. Because some people will kill for pain pills, and all they do for me is to make me a little bit dopey.

What opioids have you had?

After I had my wisdom teeth out (at the tender age of 38) I was given Vicodin (hydrocodone) and they didn't do much for me but put me in a hazy situation. Not enjoyable, more the feeling along the lines of being sleep deprived. After a couple days of that I went to OTC Aleve and it did just as much for the pain without the narcotic hangover feeling. I know a lot of people who had similar reactions to Vicodin.

A few years later I got another prescription for Vicodin after having my gall bladder removed. I went straight to the Aleve and it managed the pain just fine. I never touched the Vicodins. On another sugary a year later I was given a prescription for Vicodin again and I never even bothered to have it filled.

But all opioids are not created equal. Vicodin is popular because it's not very addictive even compared to Percocet (oxycodone). It would be interesting to see how many people get addicted using Vicodin as a gateway drug versus other opioids. The whole "less addictive" aspect speaks to that.
