Is it just me who thinks this?

Is there really any point of being in a serious long-term relationship or be married if you can't have kids together? I'm talking about two people quite possibly over age forty who would likely be according to some too old to be having kids. I struggle to see the purpose of why two people would want to be so restricted by being in a serious relationship or being married if something more sentimental and tangible can't come from the relationship besides just the two peoples feeling for each other.

reply

I really don't care what other people do or don't do.

Some people dislike children, and like being in a monogamous relationship, and their idea of perfect happiness is marriage or a long-term relationship without children.

If it doesn't appeal to you, great! You know what you want! Just don't marry someone who genuinely wants to be in a marriage without children, it wouldn't be fair to them.

sure, lots of points. companionship, intimacy, care-giving & care-taking, someone waiting for you when you come home, the occasional hot meal, travel companion, someone to talk about what you're reading/watching/thinking.

or so i hear...

they fall in love?

reply

If that's what they want then why not? A lot of marriages don't work out (regardless of whether or not they have children) and people end up getting a divorce. Some do.

Also, marriage doesn't actually prevent or restrict people from having relationships outside of it...

reply

The commitment that marriage represents legally, spiritually and socially help keep people together during the hard times, which most relationships have. It also demonstrates to everyone, your partner included, that you hope to be together forever. It also merges 2 families together, which tends to be a strength , which extends to the community. There is also the benefit of solidarity that it presents to children. I can't imagine choosing between 2 parents for my last name. Yeah, lots of good reasons to get married.

It sounds like religious overtures.

reply

How do any of those things remotely have any religious components?

reply

🤔...Cos they love each other maybe.

reply

Companionship.
