It dawned on my today, saying "my stereo" now sounds dated

I was listening to the radio and a Beyonce song says "And I fall in love with my stereo".

I couldn't imagine a young person say "I love my stereo" because 1) they probably don't have one and 2) some wouldn't know what a stereo is.

Well you’re one up on me. I still call it a victrola

We should have 500 channel audio by now.

What year was stereo introduced???? Let me Bing it~~~~~~~

According to Wikipedia it was invented in the 30s and sold to the public in different forms in the late 50s.

As far as I know every piece of music that I own is 2 channel, stereo.

:)

Well, live music was always in stereo, so the mono period was just a technological blip.

Two channel with two speakers, separated by a good distance, will create the 'stereo field' effect, which is like sitting in front of a stage of musicians.

The sound mixer will generally put the singer, bass, kick drum and snare drum in the exact center. After that he can pan left and right different instruments and backing vocals.

Sadly people buy single speaker units where the left and right channel speakers are so close to one another that there is no stereo field.

Stereo is worth the effort of having two speakers.

I get the feeling this was not well appreciated when in the late 70s band would PAN the sound back-and-forth.

Loved Emerson, Lake and Palmer back in the day, and they did a couple songs that panned a lot, not to mention Beatles, etc.
I enjoy isolating instruments on the L or R, but maybe it's not a great representation of how they really sound.

Good point.

I dunno about you, but I listen to an Immersive Acoustic Soundscape.

My desktop computers and my widescreen television all have stereo speaker setups.

Where do you live?

I live in L.A. and everyone I know, including my Zillennial nieces and nephews have hand-me-down stereos and even turntables.
