Popeye question

Does anyone else remember an episode where Popeye was out of spinach and there was none around to be found, but was able to get a super strength boost from some other food? It could have been garlic, but I'm not positive since I was a little kid and it was over 30 years ago. I tried to google it, but nothing helpful came up.

The summary does say that he tries different vegetable, but they didn't work. It might be the one though. I could have sworn he ended up eating garlic (or something) and got strong enough to beat Bluto's butt as usual. They should come up with a new Popeye jingle for that. Maybe something like:

I smell like a harlot,
When I eats my garlic...etc.

In How Green Is My Spinach Bluto destroys the world's spinach crop. Popeye gets out of the predicament when the narrator breaks the fourth wall and asks the audience if anyone has any spinach. A boy tosses a can into the screen.

The one Moonglum9 is looking for is Greek Mirthology. See my post below.

I love how you have the spoiler box for a 1950s cartoon. Sad thing is, someone would probably complain if you didn't.

reply

Thanks. I always use the spoiler option regardless of the age of a film because you never know who has seen it. And, as you said, some people like to complain. They will look for any excuse to do so.

I have a vague memory of the same.
I only liked the black and white Popeyes. He would constantly mutter funny shit under his breath in those. The color ones sucked.

When I see the fast food chain Popeyes signs, I cant help but read it as "Pope-Yes." To which I shout "Pope No!"

The episode is Greek Mirthology (1954): https://moviechat.org/tt0150784/Greek-Mirthology
Popeye's ancient Greek ancestor "Hoicules" gets his strength by sniffing garlic. He later discovers spinach.
