I met a movie producer/director once, back around 1980. He wasn't based on Hollywood and had no desire to be. He kept his budgets very low and distributed his movies over three US states, at drive-in theaters. "Yeah, I'm not famous and not rich. And a good many of the audience are kids who don't even watch the movie, they're just renting a place to suck face. So what? The movies make a profit, and I get to make a decent living doing what I like to do."
I think that after banking $90 million, getting my sixth Oscar, my third Tony, and my fifth Emmy, I'd like to do something like that. Start a small production company. Keep costs low by hiring mostly unknown actors. Increase revenue by sometimes hiring a big name and offering the opportunity to do something he or she hadn't done before. "Hey, Harrison Ford, you've never directed anything? Here's your chance. George C. Scott, you wanna play a cowardly wimp? I've got another movie with a part for you. I can't pay you much upfront, but you get 30% of the profits for your respective movies." The profit sharing would ensure they had a vested interest in the movies' success rather than possibly regarding them as opportunities to just try out wild ideas.
I think I'd do something like that. If I had any talent. Which I don't.
