Is it appropriate to watch Schindler's List on Christmas Eve?

We always watch a long movie on Christmas Eve. Last year it was Gone With The Wind. This year's candidates so far are Dances With Wolves and Dr. Zhivago. I threw Schindler's List into the mix. My wife says no way.

reply

I think it would be appropriate, but I can understand why some might not want to. It is a very heavy film.

reply

What about watching one of these :

Ben-Hur (1959)
The Ten Commandments (1956)
Hamlet (1996)
The Right Stuff (1983)
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
Spartacus (1960)
Barry Lyndon (1975)

reply

Ben-Hur we watched on Boxing Day last year. Barry Lyndon and Lawrence of Arabia I haven't seen in total. Spartacus is one of my favorites. No interest in the Bard. The Ten Commandments - possibly.

Diehard only.

I have spoken.

reply

Die Hard isn't a long movie. He is looking for long movies to watch on Christmas eve.

reply

He can watch it twice :)

reply

Yes, perfect answer

reply

Watch all the Die Hard movies. There are like 17 movies or so.

reply

I missed two of those but otherwise a fine list👍

reply

Which two haven't you seen?

reply

Barry Lyndon and Lawrence...I bailed out of Lawrence, it was a real snoozer for me and I dislike Ryan O'Neal a lot so I could not do that Lyndon movie all the way through either...They are famous and probably both excellent but I thought both were really annoying...Once again I'm probably in the wrong here but phooey to those movies anyway

reply

No, it is not.

reply

Gone With The Wind has death and destruction.

reply

That's not cool, either. I'd go with Dr. Zhivago.

reply

that seems to be the leading candidate

reply

Dr. Zhivago has death and destruction as well as ending on a sad note.

reply

that is true. doesn't bother me though.

reply

I love that movie, and the book, I just thought that if your wife wanted to avoid the downers it may not be the best choice.

reply

I think we have settled on Dances with Wolves on the 24th and Dr Zhivago on the 26th. Unless I can come up with something else. One Upon A Time In America is another long one we haven't seen.

reply

I don't know how you feel about LOTRs, but you could do all 3 extended edition ones on boxing day. :)

reply

There is snow in some scenes.

reply

Why would you want to watch such a downer of a movie on Xmas?

reply

I am not a big Christmas person. There are only three Christmas movies I watch and I have seen them more than enough.

reply

No, it’s way too depressing. You should watch something up lifting. This year has been hard enough...

reply

Dances With Wolves is just as good and a sweet romance to boot...Costner at his finest!

Unfortunately the Indians wind up as screwed as the European Jews...Just watch E.T. instead...that's a fine feel-good movie

reply

The wolf scene is too heartbreaking too.

reply

Yes, that was pretty awful

reply

The only grownup movie one is allowed to watch on Christmas Eve is Diehard. Those are the rules.

reply

not long enough

reply

I will watch both Die Hard and Black Christmas '74

Deal with it😛

reply

How can you break the rules like this?!?!?!?!?!111?!!!!!

reply

You don't want to get caught up with a guy like me Dotty
I'm a loner, a rebel...
