The death of the url/.com

Nowdays, people just google the name of a business and don't bother inputting a URL.

It means you don't necessarily need to purchase your business name with a DOT.COM, because all that matters is that you're top the list when someone searches your business.

It's not so much the end of domain names as it is a shift in the way people use applications. I have witnessed multiple instances of the following:

Person opens a browser.
Person uses the address bar search function to search 'google'
Person is taken to a Google search result page with google.com as the top choice.
Person clicks on link and gets redirected to google.com.
Person types 'website.com' into the search bar and hits enter.
Person proceeds to a search result page with 'website.com' as the top search result.
Person clicks on link.
I try to maintain a :-| face.

I've put a url into google just because it defaults to a google search bar when opening a new tab. It feels wrong however.

You are right... except for return visitors.

You can type “Amazon” etc.

But think of a small art website that sells art supplies - you find it, it’s great prices.

You found it with “cheap art supplies” 7 pages back in google.

You want to use it again - but you’ll never find it in google again.

The domain...

CheapArtSupplies .com
Or
Habsburg656 .any.co.this

The domain names is your return visitors.
