Gonna buy a tank and an aeroplane
When she catches up with me
Won't be no time to explain
She thinks I've been with another woman
And that's enough to send her half insane
Gonna buy a fast car
Put on my lead boots
And take a long, long drive
I may end up spending all my money
But I'll still be alive

The Godfathers of Punk

reply

Yes! (I don't think I've ever heard The Who described as the Godfathers of Punk. Interesting.)

I know the name Captain Beefheart but I can't say I've ever heard anything he played.

reply

Ashtray Heart is a good one from Cap B….I’ve never posted any songs because I didn’t think there were any Captain Beefheart fans here

I gave Don Van Vliet his only post here:

Did you ever stand and shiver
While looking at a freezing river?
Have you froze to the bone
With just a coat to keep you warm?
To keep you from a howlin' wind
To keep you from a howlin' wind
Now listen
Have you perished in the drizzling rain?
Tried to light a lift but all in vain
With your sock on your head
And that old coat on your back
To keep you from the drizzlin' rain
Oh, to keep you from the drizzlin' rain

I'd really like to change the world
And save it from the mess it's in
I'm too weak, I'm so thin
I'd like to fly but I can't even swim

reply

Wish I could fly like Superman, the kinks

ABBA, dancing Queen

I didn't overlook it...I just didn't know it! 😃 I have probably heard this song at least a thousand times in my life...and yet, I never made the connection with respect to these lyrics. That's part of why I find this so fun...songs that you think you know by heart...sometimes, you don't! 😃

reply

Yeah, yeah, I hear ya, G&G! Glad you found the game and like it. We need some new blood around here. I was gone for close to 5 months or something and my rule is to answer all the unanswered before I post my songs. I think I had something like 70 pages to run through. A few more to go- I hope to post my picks tomorrow…

Salut!

reply

Awesome! You are excellent at this...I look forward to seeing the songs you post. Even with the ones I have no clue on, I enjoy seeing the answers. It's fun to see what people's musical tastes are! 😃

Sslssg is the best player; I think she understands and hums melodies so it’s genre that stumps her, but she still knows many genres. I just remember words and they stick. DJ Hownos and C-dog know shyt I’ve never heard, but they’ve indirectly recommended artists with who i know their name but not much of their catalog (DJ H- Lightfoot, Joni— CDog , 80s post-punk and wacky lyrics that make Weird Al look tame); both with a very healthy respect for rock n roll.

The answers are fun. Some of MC Hownos’ lyrics remind me of the old game show Name that Tune which ran in the 70s to the mid 80s with hosts like Tom Kennedy and Jim Lange. It was interesting during the part where contestants would essentially ante up by guessing how many notes it would take to guess a song. It would go “I could name it in 3 notes…” and then “2 notes” and then “1 note”. I was always waiting for a player to say “Ill guess it with the opening clue” which was the host introducing the song as “This musical piece was…” or what not— but that never happened. Hownos drops like a line or a word — it may be the line of the song— but it’s funny because some folks get “em quick, like “I can guess that in 1 note…”

C-dog had a theme some Valentines Day ago where he posted “love” songs. There was some love but it was more antithetical to the real themes of adoration. Themes included heartbreak, bondage, descriptions and activities of “love” —to put it kindly— puppies, violence, rainbows and drugs. Lyrics answered or not, by just reading, hilarity ensued. I know this is just a internet movie message board with mediocre traffic , but to call that exercise anything but legendary would be an understatement.

And it’s always cool to hear a story about how a song is remembered or a story about a moment in time with that song and/or a lyric.

Yes, sslssg is really excellent at this also. I feel like I should know more of hers than what I do. Unfortunately for me, I have the worst singing voice in the world, so I can't really approach it like she does ( It's a good thing that I don't have to sing these!). 😃

I very much enjoy the posts here, even if I don't know them. A lot of good variety here...it's a lot of fun!

Yes, I remember the old "Name That Tune" game! Those were the days...I probably would've choked like a dog if I were on that show!

I really loved your last paragraph. That is really so true about the power of music...how a song can bring you back to a certain time or era in your life. I really enjoy it when people do that with their music.

Have a great night!

reply

I hear you GolfnGuitars.

tcrum created super fun and simple game but I am very (very) bad at this, even the famous ones I usually didn't recognize.

reply

You seem good to me! It's difficult...I think what this game shows to me is how important the music is in regard to the lyrics. I have a "guitar player's ear," so when I listen to music, I tend to hear it from that aspect. But even songs like this one, which I've heard a bunch in my life, I just couldn't make the connection with the lyrics to the song. It's a fun game...but, yes, it can be maddening! 😃
