Godfrey is not exactly poor. He's actually a rich man

I saw it a long time ago. I thought he was a homeless bum.

At the beginning of the movie, he's a homeless bum. Later one we discover he's actually very rich, but he decided to run away and go missing because of a personal crisis

Watch it again. It's a wonderful movie.
