Are there actresses whose acting is under-rated because they are distractingly good looking ?

A few who come to mind:

Michelle Pfeiffer
Ellen Page

Any more ?

reply

Rachel McAdams

reply

Good one !

reply

I mean when it comes to being distractingly hot, those wouldn't be the two people that come to my mind. Not saying they are ugly, far from it. But distractingly hot? I don't think so.

reply

But I didn't say "distractingly hot" did I ? I said distractingly good looking. There is a difference.

reply

Between hot and Good looking? I would use those words interchangeably.

reply

English is the richest language on Earth, full of subtle distinctions. You could get to know and use it more fully.

reply

I'm just saying that they mean the same thing the way I use them.

reply

I wish people would find another adjective besides "hot". It's shallow, and in fact a bit belittling. Any stripper could be called "hot". But a beautiful woman deserves to be praised more highly than a stripper.

reply

Just so.

reply

Adjective police over here. It's just a word. When I use it it means beautiful.

reply

Words are not "just" words. Here is a Game of Thrones clip that illustrates and illuminates the point.

Sam enters the library of the Citadel in Oldtown for the first time:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6x2epcK5rU

reply

I'm not going to watch that. I haven't seen game of thrones. I want to go in fresh.

reply

Understandable.

reply

I get the point your trying to make though. It's just the fact that 'hot' is the word my vernacular choses by default. Might be that public school learning the state provided me with.

reply

At the risk of labouring the point here is a list of synonyms for "beautiful" from a thesaurus:

alluring
appealing
charming
cute
dazzling
delicate
delightful
elegant
exquisite
fascinating
fine
good-looking
gorgeous
graceful
grand
handsome
lovely
magnificent
marvelous
pleasing
pretty
splendid
stunning
superb
wonderful
admirable
angelic
beauteous
bewitching
classy
comely
divine
enticing
excellent
fair
foxy
ideal
nice
pulchritudinous
radiant
ravishing
refined
resplendent
shapely
sightly
statuesque
sublime
symmetrical
taking
well-formed

reply

Are trying to point out that hot is not on that list? Copy and pasting doesn't make you intelligent. It makes you come off as condescending though.

reply

Well you can take that post as being condescending or instructive. You have chosen the former which says more about you than it does about me.

reply

All I'm saying is I to have heard of those words. I didn't use the word hot because of my lack of thesaurus knowledge. I used it because that's how I speak. If we all talked the same it would be very fucking boring.

reply

No. If we all talked the same, there wouldn't be quite so many 'fucking' mistakes and misunderstandings in our society, and we would all communicate with each other better.

Incidentally, you do know there is an online Thesaurus, don't you?

reply

I'm contemplating whether or not to answer that or not. Well at least I was. Feels like it might be rhetorical.

reply

It's not rhetorical at all. It's an unequivocal rebuttal of your comment that correct speech is boring.

reply

I never said correct speech is boring. I just hate people who get bogged down it the details.

reply

"I just hate people who get bogged down it the details."

And I get annoyed by people who don't pay attention to details, Davo.

reply

Are you trying to imply or infer that, I can never remember the distinction, that I'm a sock?

reply

Not a sock. Just a tiny bit illiterate. I could go back over this conversation and find numerous examples of your incorrect spelling, word usage etc.. But I won't labour the point.

reply

Love how your idea of not labouring a point is infact doing so. Also my bad I don't speak correct. But really that's just you projecting your own insecurity onto others.

reply

I know. Because people have a college degree doesn't mean they have innate-intelligence, but memorized facts from textbooks. (and I'm not projecting by implying that I don't have a degree, but think the majority of society is very simple in that aspect)

reply

In what aspect?

reply

being simpleminded ( having a college degree not meaning they necessarily have innate-intelligence, but memorized facts from textbooks)

reply

I get ya. But good memory is a trademark for high intelligence. But I know what you mean. Just cause you can recite things that other people discovered, that don't mean you are smart.

reply

It's a different type of intelligence. (and it depends on the college-graduate, I don't mean all)

reply

Plus thinking that we should all speak the same for the sake of understanding is almost very communist of you.

reply

Oh please! Try harder.

reply

"It's just a word. When I use it it means beautiful."

Your comment is expeditiously umbrageous, as I've already told you macular times. So don't perambulate it.

And don't pretend you don't know what I mean.

reply

Eat a sandwich.

reply

That's better.

reply

Why is that? A beautiful stripper is a beautiful woman. Why do other women deserve higher praise?
But the word hot is belittling?

reply

Yes, the word "hot" is belittling. It's an easily-remembered, common, faintly-praising word. If you want to praise a woman's beauty meaningfully, you take pains to select the most descriptive complimentary word. "Hot" could mean anything, and it usually means sexy. A beautiful woman is more than merely sexy.

reply

That wasn’t my question. Why does a beautiful woman deserve higher praise than a beautiful woman that strips?

I don’t care what you think of the word hot.

reply

Well, Froggie, as the philosophers say, beauty is more than skin deep. And any woman can take her clothes off.

To my mind, a beautiful woman who doesn't take her clothes off to entertain strangers comes across as more beautiful than one who does.

reply

Well popcorny, I find that statement snotty and judgmental. Beauty is definitely more than skin deep. Yet, you are the one saying one woman should get higher praise for beauty because of what they do for a living. I don’t care what your preference is.
Also, any woman can take their clothes off, but not every woman can be hired as a stripper.
😆 beauty is more than skin deep but you’re on here saying women should be praised by their beauty, apparently some more than others.

reply

I'm not saying they should be, just that we are more inclined to, when the woman also has attractive character traits.

reply

I feel like maybe you should work on your attractive character traits. Just a suggestion.

reply

I'm sure you're right. While I'm busy doing that, you might want to work on that civility thing.

reply

You can't take a hint can you. And the point your trying to make is people with good character are more attractive? No shit.

reply

davodikum,
You said nothing wrong or inappropriate. Popcorn is just being PC and wants to be trivial (argue for the sale of arguing) like a young alpha-feminist or an obsessive bored schoolteacher
And beauty IS skin-deep in the context presented in the thread. We don't become 1) aroused by others, nor 2) judge beauty (including strippers) based on their "beautiful mind".
..sign of the times.

reply

You're right. Nobody wants to see rain man strip.

reply

With that said, I do think there is somewhat of a difference between sexy vs. beauty. But your term "hot" was adequate.

reply

Thank you.

reply

ProductionNow, since you've elected to contribute to this more-or-less private dispute between Davo and me, and since you've made a grossly inaccurate observation about me, I feel obliged to answer the charge. I AM NOT an alpha-feminist. Such an absurdly false assessment of me tells me something about you, and I very much doubt that you'll have anything to say in future discussions that will impress me any better.

reply

Sorry, it's not ''Private"; you're on a PUBLIC board and I am sure you do not only respond to posts that you create or never contribute to others' posts. Nice try.
That's all.

reply

Evidently the subtlety of having a "private" conversation on a public forum is troublesome for you. That may be because you are one of those who feels comfortable butting in to a conversation that has predominantly occupied two individuals. You made use of the rather fluid etiquette of the internet, which doesn't recognise the simple expedient of tact.

reply

This discourse on personal subtext clashing is making me hot. Either of you dames pulchritudinous?

reply

lol!

Well, I'm not female, Anubis. Nor am I especially good-looking, in my opinion. I don't know about ProductionNow.

reply

😂Funny. The list of words you don’t use if you’re trying to pick up a chick. If my man said “damn girl, you looking shapely today”it’s not gonna go over well for him.

reply

P.S. I implied that you are ACTING like one, regardless of what and who you are. You're pompous and transparent.

reply

I'm "acting like one", but I'm not one? Not sure, are you? Yet you're sure I'm pompous and transparent...

reply

You don’t get aroused by actresses for their beautiful minds either. What’s your point.

reply

Please re-read my post: I edited it to be more precise.

reply

This guy is simp

reply

You don't think that there is a difference between watching a great acting performance by a beautiful woman and watching a great stripping performance by a hot woman and that the former deserves more praise than the latter ?

reply

Non deserves more praise than the other. Both are works if art.

reply

You're missing the point. Although two beautiful woman may accurately be described as beautiful, only one deserves to have that fact remarked upon.

reply

Both of these sculptures are works of art. Do you think they both deserve equal praise ?

reply

I think praise is in the eye of the beholder.

reply

Ha ! You are stubborn, I'll give you that.

reply

I'll take that as a compliment!

reply

I think I missed my calling by not joining the debate club.

reply

"I think praise is in the eye of the beholder".

That is exactly what I've been saying, Davo. If an observer sees beauty in a woman, he is inclined to praise it. If he sees beauty but the woman's beauty is somewhat dissipated by her less attractive characteristics, he isn't.

reply

That is not what I'm saying. You can twist my words to fit your logic if you please. But don't begin to assume I agree with you. Hence why we argue.

reply

Well you must admit that the sentence, "Praise in in the eye of the beholder" is a bit obscure. What exactly did you mean?

reply

It means each to their own.

reply

But you said you "hate people who get bogged down in details" of language! If I choose to use my language correctly and consistently so that I'm comprehensible to the people I'm addressing, isn't that an example of "to each his own"?

Or do you object to that as well?

reply

So your argument is now that I wasn't comprehensible? That's bullshit. I say what I mean and I mean what I say. I haven't never been ununderstandable. You just can't wrap your puny head around slang, or the way people talk when it ain't textbook.

reply

That's very entertaining, Davo, but I always think that when argument is abandoned in favour of self-parody, the arguer has abdicated. So if you haven't got anything else, I'll sign off from this particular discussion.

reply

Great reply! You walk away but under the illusion you won. It ain't just a river in Egypt, the saying makes sense to me now.

reply

Hey, sunshine, I'm not the one in denial. I am, however, the one who remained civil in this debate. You aren't. I'll speak to you again when you learn to be courteous on forums.

reply

Hows the high ground? Air thin up there? Don't call me sunshine either.

reply

Don't you love Popcorn's adjectives/verbs, words that she/he would never use in everyday life? LOL

reply

He/she might though. One never knows. I speak much like I write. A mix of 10 cent words, euphemisms, and gutter slang. At least the spelling errors cannot be seen when I speak. I support freedom of word use but confess to having occasional sensitivity to some modern slang. So, no dog in the fight (heh), but enjoying the fight nevertheless.

reply

He/she does, in fact, Anubis. And like you, I use a mixture of correct words and common words, and very occasionally slang. Sometimes I'll throw in a polysyllablic word when a simpler one will do. But that's only because I like language, and I don't want my post high-school English studies to go to waste.

reply

"he would never use in everyday life?"

PN, you have no way of knowing what my everyday vocabulary is, so I'll tell you. It is the same as my Net vocabulary.

reply

Nonsense.. to a degree. Liz Taylor is never going to be judged as homely, like Sandra Bernhard will be judged as beautiful. I think subjectivity is true only to a certain extent

reply

Truth? I think actors should be praised for their acting skills. I think women in general should be praised for their character and not their looks. That’s why you got a bunch of dumb bitches thinking plastic surgery will improve their lives.
No, I don’t think a woman actor deserves higher praise for being beautiful.

reply

Froggieandtoadie, are you a woman? Honest question.

reply

Are you a man?

reply

I am. Answer the question.

reply

I can't. Cause the question isn't directed towards me.

reply

Sorry. Getting crowded here.

reply

Froggie, are you a woman? As Judge Judy would say, that's either a yes or a no.

reply

I don’t answer to judge Judy and I certainly don’t answer to your dumbass. Wtf does it matter?

reply

Okay, you've answered my question. Civility isn't your strong suit, is it, frog?

reply

Certainly not. Civility is for dicks that say insulting things in a polite way. Civility is for people that look down on others for their job occupation. Being a good person is far more important to me than acting civil.

reply

Words fail me, frog. They really do.

You know, if only for the sake of never having to encounter again such offensive crassness, I would put you on Ignore. But I see you're not even worth that. In any case, I now know that you're (1) female, (2) vulgar, and (3) a simple-minded boor.

See? I can be uncivil, too.

reply

You civil folks always show your true colors eventually. Did I offend your delicate sensibilities? Do you really think I give a shit if you put me on ignore? The funny thing is you think you’re insulting me, but I’m perfectly fine with being offensive, crass, and vulgar. It is you my dear that is simple-minded.😀

reply

Oh, hahahahaa!! Classic, frog! I showed my true colours eventually, did I? Oh dear.......

Well, at least you're amusing, in your own way. Crass, vulgar, and simple-minded, but amusing.

reply

Thanks sweetpea! You might even learn something from my boorish ways.😘

reply

Plastic surgery DOES improve their lives depending on the type of plastic surgery. Looks DO matter in the real world, not the PC delusional existence you mean. I'm not speaking about inflated -lips or bad cheek implants.

Such hypocrisy: you Cher fans all praise her--especially after her nosejob--, yet then say plastic surgery does not improve their lives. Yeah, it does. And helps you get a date easier also.

reply

Lol wtf? When did I become a Cher fan? Looks matter to shallow people. I think being confident with yourself just the way you are is extremely important. I would never change anything about my looks to fit society’s standards of beauty. I’ve never had a problem attracting boys, and guess what. I don’t even wear makeup most of the time. Women should feel beautiful just the way they are. Plus those plastic surgery bitches look like weird alien people to me.

reply

I didn't say you are a Cher fan, but using her as an example regarding plastic surgery

Because YOU attract the boys without make-up doesn't mean women who are not naturally pretty/sexy do. ( you already know that) And I said the plastic surgery that does not look freaky, but natural-looking plastic-surgery. You're being very unrealistic.

reply

You may think I’m being unrealistic, but I think natural beauty is gorgeous. You don’t have to look a certain way to be beautiful. You just have to be confident and ignore society when it tells you to be attractive, you must look like this. I also think women need to quit worrying so much about what men want them to look like.

reply

I do agree that confidence can definitely make you look very attractive and get you the same stuff as women who look like Gisellle Bunchen.

If you are confident and dress nicely with some nice makeup you can win up a lot of stuff.

This is why I loved the movie I feel pretty, it gave a beautiful message to women how confidence is almost everything and be ofcourse positive with great attitude.

It bothers me it was so hatted, more than when people say they don’t like superhero movies ( well actually as much as a fan I am of that genre, it doesn’t bother me at all if someone doesn’t like them ) But this one I feel like it was hatted by prejudice against the actress.

I’m not an any Schumer fan but everyone hating it just because she was the lead found it unfair and it’s not because she didn’t feet the part people just dismissed the film because people don’t like her sense of humor in her show.

It was a film with a great message to women and it made sad how underlooked it was

reply

For me it’s more about having your own style or swagger. I’m confident as hell in a ballcap and jeans. I’ll dress up for my guy sometimes, but my style works for me because it’s my style. Ya know? It’s what I’m comfortable in.
I haven’t seen I Feel Pretty, but I do think owning exactly who you are is key.
Amy Schumer does get a lot of hate, but to me she doesn’t shine from the inside and doesn’t come off as real. Of course she doesn’t fit the Hollywood mold of beauty either, so I’m sure some have an issue with that.
Psss... I abhor superhero movies. Don’t hate me!
I love the respect you have for other females. I think it says so much about you. Good heart on you kid.

reply

What a damn right answer

reply

Hey capn! What do I win?

reply

A neeeew house !

reply

Or a boat

reply

I just want my eyepatch!! I don’t need a boat. I got this friend, kinda the pirate type, so I cruise on his ship.

reply

Bring your dart board. Maybe extra darts

reply

Done. I don’t think there are enough darts in the world, but I’ll see what I can do.

reply

Exactly having your own style and feel good with it, dressing the way you want and feel good about it it’s key.

Check I feel pretty and I feel like you will like it.

It’s perfectly fine if superhero movies are not your thing. Most of my friends don’t like them and I’m perfectly okay and still love them

reply

I’ll check it out at your recommendation. Thanks. My friends don’t like any of my movies, I know how that goes. ✌️

reply

You're delusional for PC reasons. Tell that to a women who had a huge bump-nose and later had surgery on it, tell you what the score is (she'll hand your ass to you). You are speaking for other women.

reply

No, I’m just giving my opinion. Also, Jennifer Grey

reply

Yes, Jennifer Grey..prettier after the nose job. Ask her if she agrees with you.
Grey was "cute and snuggly" with her earlier nose because of her age and it made her look like a character actress. That has nothing to do with her personal life.

reply

Sure..and you naturally are attracted to men--- and have no visceral opinion about their looks.

reply

Sure I do, but I’m not attracted to the gq boys, or most of the movie star types. I love character, originality, dimples, I’m a sucker for a guy with a gap in his teeth. We all have preferences and that’s ok. I just hate that some women feel they have to fit a certain mold to be attractive. Or men for that matter. My guy is a big ol’ burly dude and he’s sexy as hell to me.

reply

I understand that; it's your libido for a certain man or type of look. But, I am speaking more about their appearance in general and the odds of a woman being attracted to them, than not.

With women, it's not always due to fitting a certain mold, nor wanting to look different to please men. I am exlcluding the plastic-surgery junkies that look worse with every procedure they have since they likely have psych-issues. It's not a black or white topic

reply

I hear you. I agree with that.

reply

What about the overpraise (paradox) of beautiful actresses due to the admiration of them? And so people could take enjoyment in saying "gee..who knew she could act!?" (Marilyn, Farrah..)

reply

I honestly don’t pay much attention to public opinion. Most females are used to these attitudes. I just roll my eyes. Boys can be so silly sometimes. It’s more amusing than anything.

reply

If I may say, you used to act like a real dick. This is the most pleasant conversation we have had. Did you go on a pilgrimage through the desert or something?

reply

gee..

reply

I didn’t mean it bad.You just seem different in a good way.

reply

I know; thanks. (must be "ambient moments").

reply

😁I caught you on a good night, huh? I’m not judging, you should see the horseshit I say on here when I’m drunk! No bueno dude!😄

reply

However, if Norman Reedus gives me a ring, I’m gonna have to ditch my man.

reply

But I agree: the generic perfect types are not always the sexiest

reply

Ugh so boring! More times than not these guys think they’re gods gift to women but have nothing of importance to say. I don’t want some dick that has to look at himself in the mirror constantly.

reply

I know (rather, "knew") 2 so-called friends just like that....actors and not capable of a relationship. Clinical narcissism. And if they have something important to say, it's sabotaged in the long run by their narcissism.

reply

The important thing they have to say is “look at me, I’m so important” Maybe I’m definitely a bitch, but I think a little ego bruising for these types are healthy. Just doing my part production now.

reply

Yeah saying a woman is hot is belittling but referring to stripers as not beautiful is kosher.

reply

Right? Stupid.

reply

At least somebody is backing me up. Me alone knowing I'm right is pointless. I need observers. Or else I'm just playing with myself.

reply

I LOVE ELLEN PAGE.SHE IS A FAVORITE OF MINE,HOWEVER DISTRACTINGLY GOOD LOOKING?...I CAN AGREE WITH YOU ON THAT...BUT MICHELLE PFEIFFER...I CANT THINK OF TOO MANY WOMEN AS BEAUTIFUL AS PRIME PFEIFFER.

reply

What year or movie would you say is PP?

reply

SCARFACE POSSIBLY...MAYBE BATMAN RETURNS...MY PERSONAL TOP TIER PRIMO PFEIFFER IS ONE FINE DAY,BUT I HAVE DIFFERENT TASTE.

reply

I haven't seen that! George Clooney and phife. How have I missed this gem?

reply

I DO NOT KNOW...I SAW IT IN THEATER,HAVE BEEN IN LOVE WITH THE FILM AND PFEIFFER EVER SINCE...."I COULD NEVER BE YOU WOMAN" WITH PAUL RUDD IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF OLDER,YET STILL SUPER HOT PFEIFFER.

reply

And 90s George Clooney is just another animal altogether.

reply

ICNBYW was also Saoirse Ronan's film debut.

reply

THATS RIGHT...SHE WAS GREAT IN THE FLICK...PFEIFFER AND RONAN HAD A REALLY COOL CHEMISTRY.

reply

Well, since she received four Golden Globes and three Academy Award nominations, Natalie Wood was apparently considered a good actress. I don't see it, myself, but I do think she was the most heart-breakingly gorgeous woman in movies. I could gaze at her for hours, (in fact, I have done), but never find a flaw.

As for her acting, I think the only film in which she displayed real skill was "Splendour In The Grass".

reply

Yes I haven't seen many of her films but those I have seen didn't impress me greatly as far as her acting was concerned. But as you say she was very beautiful.

reply

I always had a thing for Russian girls, even before I knew she was Russian. I even love her name, viz, Natalia Nikolaevna Zacharenko.

I don't usually take note of movie stars' deaths, but hers got to me a bit.

reply

I was more troubled by rumours of her brutal rape at the age of seventeen supposedly at the hands of a well known Hollywood identity. Her death although tragic and untimely was, if accidental, a result of mixing too much alcohol with trying to get off a boat.

reply

"was, if accidental, a result of mixing too much alcohol with trying to get off a boat."

I rather hope that was the case. It's appalling to think that she was murdered.

reply

Haha. I misread that for a second. Thought you wrote appealing.

reply

No.

reply

Shit

reply

Her 'rape" is something you did not see. And 17 yrs old is not some "pedophile-type" age. If it was forced rape, then you're right. Too bad nobody remembers and focuses on men who have been raped--either statutory or forced.

reply

marilyn monroe

reply

Praising Marilyn Monroe ONLY because of the reverse-discriminating factor ,like Farrah Fawcett. Adequate actresses who were overly praised due to their beauty

reply

Diane Lane, Golden Age of Hollywood beauty.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Linda Cardellini

Michelle for sure .
Meg Ryan as well
