Do you think directors watch their own movies and go, "Man, I'm so brilliant!"?

I can think of someone like Tarantino doing this.

I think all artists appreciate there own work. But they always know they can do better. Once you settle or stop trying to improve you my as well throw in the towel.

reply

Fair assessment.

Well make a movie and try watching it later. It will be similar to asking if you enjoy your food after you cooked it. Sure but you would enjoy it more if someone else did it. You will likely concentrate on the mistakes you did and things that didn't work as planned. I made a few short ones and it is cringy to watch when they are fresh because I already know the plot and every detail so all I see are things I could have done better. On the other hand if enough time passes and I forget about it, I can watch it and think we'll it's not bad at all I am pretty good.

I think there's a difference of watching your own movie and nitpicking it, and watching your own movie and thinking you're a genius.

reply

Most people aside from Tarantino will watch their movie and wonder if they managed to do a good enough job to send the message they tried to send. Tarantino is the only guy that would probably watch his movie and think how good the movie is lol. I don't believe Scorsese would watch his movie like that, he would probably think about if he did good enough job here and there and hope the audience likes it. Generally if you are smug about your work it means you lack self awareness and you are not going to improve or do good work. Tarantino being an exception of course.

reply

Mediocre ones like Rian Johnson do, yes.

reply

Why you gotta be like that to Rian Johnson?

reply

Because he’s a smug tool who inserts patronising political messaging into his films.

reply

No. There's nothing for them to pick up on.

reply

They do watch their own movies. You can hear everything in the commentaries.

reply

But do they think they're brilliant?

reply

Some have good reason to do this. Yes.

I wonder if good famous directors also look at their shit films and say, this is shit.

reply

Not that they're good filmmakers, but Joel Schumacher apologized for his Batman films. Kevin Smith constantly makes fun of Jersey Girl.

reply

Kind of admirable.

reply

Yes.

reply

I don’t think this just applies to directors. A lot of douchebags seem to think this. Example: Man, I’m so brilliant. I talked that dumb ho into coming home with me last night and I didn’t even have to wrap it up.
Your brilliance just earned you some chlamydia. High five bro!

reply

Good point.

reminds me of a friend of mine. girls will say to him "hey you look like brad pitt"
and he says "you mean brad pitt looks like me".

reply

Ugh these guys are the worst! I’m sure all of the ladies have experienced many dickbag pick up lines. The most insulting and disgusting pick-up line I ever got was from this guy that came and sat by me at the club. He looked at me and threw his Porsche keychain on the bar, didn’t even try to start a conversation (I assumed he struggled with the use of words) Really? Like I’m gonna hop in bed with you cause you drive a Porsche? Gross. Get the fuck on you worthless shit.

reply

but on the other hand some girls threw themselves at him.

i remember one time he walked down the bar and a girl grabbed him and said "where are you going?" and he said nastily "i'm going to the f@#$ing bathroom do you mind?" she said "make sure you come back"

another time after bar hopping all night we stop at a diner and grabbed breakfast. waitress asks my order and i give it..... she says to him "what can i do for you?" he says "you can bend across the table and i'll poke you in the hiney hole" she says "thats not on the menu, try again" but then she proceeds to leave her number on the receipt .... im just like wow...

reply

I’m sure. Everyone has a type I guess. I await the day this fella speaks like this to the wrong bitch. That’s gonna be funny.
