You're not allowed to advertise prescription medicine in Australia

Only 'over the counter' medicine like paracetamol, cold and flu medicines, muscle creams, etc can be marketed.

They don't want big pharma telling people what drugs they might need, that's the doctor's job.

So when I go to America, I'm really shocked with all the drug ads on TV.

Do you think they have a place? Or should be banned in your country too?

reply

I would ban them all

The 'list of possible side effects' disclaimer always sounds WAY worse than your illness!

Explosive Anal Leakage, Night Terrors and Loss Of Time sound far worse than Hay Fever!

reply

I love it when I come over and I hear these ads and the guy doing the voiceover suddenly goes into a million words a minute to try and fit all the side affects into the allotted ad time, lol.

reply

Like an auctioneer lol
I'd be more afraid of those pills than my ailment!

reply

Yes, exactly that or a race horse commentator, lol.

I remember I read the list to one of the adverts (I was bored waiting for the missus) and every side effect was really bad news - who buys this stuff?

reply

Shogun, Don’t forget:

intense pain, profuse sweating, difficulty in breathing, loss of conciousness, violent convulsions, and, finally...death.

reply

I may just suck it up and deal with my allergies😳!

reply

It would be nice to ban them, that's for sure... I'm not sure if all the ads you see are for prescription medicine, though.

The pharma industry is over the top as it is

reply

Well yeah, they advertise both, but when they say 'speak to your doctor' you need a prescription. They wouldn't introduce a possible objector to their medicine unless they had to.

reply

Same rules over here in the UK

reply

Can't advertise in Canada either. I always know when I'm on an American channel as it's all as seen on tv ads, lawyers, drugs, and class action law suits against drug companies.

reply

Countries like Canada, Austrailia, and UK do healthcare right. America's method is aimed to make people wealthy, treating people is secondary.

reply

They should not be allowed to advertise anything that requires a RX.

reply

not allowed in canada and i always think it is strange when i see it on cnn.

reply

They were banned in the US until the 1990's. I'm pretty libertarian, but I would love to see the ban reinstated.

reply

I've never liked the practice. New Zealand has them as well.
