Comedy directors are all of a sudden directing oscar movies

Adam mckay - the big short, vice

Peter Farrely - green book

Todd Phillips - joker

How did this trend started?

reply

I suppose they are talented
Joker was excellent and I'd like to see Green Book when it's streaming

reply

I have seen joker about 7 times now, awesome.

Green book was meh.

reply

it's not that new, and it's no different than comedic actors doing drama or actors becoming directors.

comedy is just how they broke in -- but they love it all. Ben Stiller wanted to be a serious director from the start but that's not how his career developed.

reply

Uhm yes it's different. Acting and directing are 2 different crafts.

reply

yeah, it is different -- but different in a way that goes against your head-scratching at this "trend"? They're creatives in film. You may have pigeon-holed them in your mind but that has little to do with their background and goals. If you think acting to directing is more of a leap, why question the shorter leap of a director directing more than one genre. That's not new. They're directors of film -- that's the "How?" The Oscar aspect is just due to the political climate and hot button issues in the films you mention. At another time, some of them would've been passed over for sure.

reply

I dunno. None of them had really directed anything good before they directed those films either.
