What makes a band "obscure"

Is Guns N Roses considered obscure?

reply

no

It's a stupid argument on fb. Obviously a band that sells out stadiums (as they did on their last tour in 2019 or 2018), has one of the most played songs at sporting events, and has over a billion views on youtube is not obscure.
According to the person arguing with me they are obscure because typical 17-18 years Olds haven't heard of them, which i would also argue is false.

Anyone that likes rock has heard of them.

reply

You’d be surprised at how many teenagers I notice wearing Guns N’ Roses t-shirts - no, they’re not a bloody obscure band.

reply

there are always some who haven't heard of an artist but obscure or not is about how many. Even if you're not sure of their catalog, when you say GnR to people, the vast majority have heard of them.

reply

SOUNDS LIKE THEY DONT HAVE A GREAT GRASP ON THE DEFINITION OF OBSCURE.

reply

An obscure band would be one that most people haven’t heard of. Guns N Roses are fairly well known.

reply

The Sterilles - On the Rag. Obviously this is the greatest song ever recorded.

Spirit, which had a Top 40 hit with "I Got a Line on You" is fairly obscure I'd say. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XKqDm3blxk

My candidate may be the album Oar by Skip Spence. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skip_Spence
