You convinced me to check the similar sounding films Immortal Combat and Mortal Kombat. They're two totally different films, haha! It was a sure enough 'huh?' moment. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, tcrum.

It never ceases to amaze the incredible contrast of Japanese culture; very formal and traditional on the outside, yet so much less restrained in their arts and entertainment. The two are not necessarily at odds more so than complimenting each other, an outlet.

I don't think it's that strange.

In western countries, we use to associate formalities and strict protocols with being close-minded, specially when it comes to sexuality, because our protocols were mostly related to Christian churches and they used to be closely linked to sexuality.

However, in Japan protocols serve to define social hierarchies and to prevent the escalation of conflicts in a highly competitive society, sexuality barely plays any role in their social rules.

The irony is, if you go back before the 1800s (prior to the Renaissance Period), eastern and western modes of thinking used to be more in sync according to "Between Heaven and Earth: a Guide to Chinese Medicine" book (very detailed; recommended). Western ideals gradually shifted to "man over nature" mindset instead of learning to live in harmony with its environment.

Christianity has ebbed back and forth between a low sex culture and a high one depending on the time and place, being a geographically rich identity. Look at the Mormons, for instance; they went from discouraging sex to wanting to have large families after getting rid of polygamist practices in the Latter-Day Saints Church (source: from JSTOR).

Your info is greatly appreciated.

I'll be glad to cite any sources though will need time to dig them up.

P.S.
Don't you just hate when you have to go back and fix autocorrect? Ah, the future of technology.

Thank you for the recommendation, I've downloaded the book. I wasn't aware of that similitude prior to 1800s, so that seems very interesting. If you have another more recommendation, I'll greatly appreciate.

I don't really agree with Christian cultures being back and forth when it comes to sex culture. It's true that they're sometimes more repressive, while other times they promote it. But it seems to me that they use to have an strong position when it comes to sex. The Mormons are indeed a good example: they went from discouraging to promoting large families, but it seems that the community needs to take an stance when it comes to sex, whatever it is.

I haven't noticed that same pattern in Asian cultures. Of course, my knowledge is very shallow (mostly, I love Asian movies and series), but it feels like sex is more of a private business as long as it's unrelated with social hierarchies (the relationship between the rich guy and the very poor and socially outcast girl is probably the most frequent trope in Korean dramas).

Flawless victory!

You're the next contestant on MovieChat's Baker's Dozen, pick your poison.

I like your phrasing of "pick your poison" so much that I think I'll make that the next Dozen!

reply

That's very flattering; just making up a rhyme to pass the time. Eh, I've been watching too much Svengoolie!
