Yeah all of those movies were dogshit. The Two Popes? If I wanted to watch two wrinkly old farts talk about God, I’d just turn on Fox.
shareOn paper I thought The Two Popes was intriguing - two (sometimes) great actors playing controversial figures in a fully fictionalised meeting. But the conversations were so contrived and unconvincing, the performances so underwhelming, the flashbacks so dull, the 'cutesy' moments (the popes dancing the Tango or discussing the Beatles) so cringy... probably my worst film of the year, certainly the most boring IMO.
shareby atlantique, do you mean the senegalese supernatural film? i watched it under the name atlantics on netflix if i remember correctly.
if so, then two of your worst were in my top 25!
Yes, that's the one... from reactions I've seen it's definitely a love it or hate it film! I thought it was painfully dull and disengaging...
sharei can get that. personally, i thought when it took its turn from fairly conventional class war struggle into something odder & more ethereal, it got substantially more interesting, and it ended up being something i really dug.
shareYeah... I really found the concept intriguing and was looking forward to this one. Maybe I'll check it out again sometime... I did think it was nicely shot (although the endless shots of the ocean became repetitive).

yesterday
I've only seen Yesterday of your list... it wasn't very good but I watched it on a flight and it passed the time reasonably well. Definitely a case of someone coming up with a (ridiculous) high concept and throwing together a second-rate script around it, though.
sharei may not be totally rational on this one.
here's the review i posted on letterboxd:
i found it easier to get through salo than watch this movie.share
yesterday is not incompetently made. it's in focus, properly lighted, the sound is clear.
but it grated on me like no other movie has in my life. i've never wanted to walk out of a theatre so badly.
only my ocd-ish need to see films through to the end & the air conditioning kept me there.
there is an interesting story in a world where only one guy remembers the beatles. you can imagine perhaps some pk dick scenarios. or just an interesting else-world take on where pop culture might have gone.
instead we just got this simpering, gutless, wimpy, sickening generic rom-com with dishwater dull, pandering mor beatles covers.
it's the kind of movie that makes god smile & say 'that was so lovely' while the devil vomits in disgust.
fuck you yesterday, you revolting piece of garbage.
fuck you for taking a pretty good idea that could have been the spring-board to something witty & bursting with imagination, and instead making the most standard, simpering rom com.
the kind of gutless film where the main character professes his love to a girl while her face is being beamed to a stadium full of people on a giant screen.
i hate you like i've never ever hated a movie.
