Plenty of sports figures have died in plane crashes, most famously the entire American Olympics figure skating team in 1961: https://time.com/5172201/1961-plane-crash-us-figure-skating/

I also forgot about the golfer. Some kind of gas was accidentally released or built up in the airplane and everyone fell asleep. They flew out over the ocean until they ran out of fuel.
