Honestly, I found The Hurt Locker somewhat underwhelming. I rated it a 6/10. I don't think it deserved to win best picture.

I preferred Near Dark, and Strange Days from Bigelow. But I think that has more to do with my taste in movies.

If you like body horror American Mary (2012 Soska Sisters) is pretty good.

i like that movie quite a bit.

it's a body modification rape/revenge horror film starring katherine isabelle, so it's basically impossible for me not to love it tbqh.

my only beef with it is that they took the very foxy tristan risk and made her a bit ugly with all the body mod makeup.

but otherwise it's perfect.

I've seen Bend It Like Beckham (6/10), Lost in Translation (5/10), Thirteen (7/10), and Winter’s Bone (6/10). The other ones you mentioned sound interesting.

I like a few of yours but I thought I'd only add rather than add and repeat. From your list, I like The Rider and Frozen River the most.

Why only 5/10 on Lost in Translation? I'm not a fan of her work otherwise, but thought that was a very good movie.

I found Lost in Translation to be slow and unengaging. I wasn't impressed with the performances and I found that the film dragged in parts. I really liked The Virgin Suicides and The Beguiled though.

the nightingale never made it to the theatres here, which annoys & baffles me a bit, considering how much acclaim the babadook got. it's something i very badly want to see.

meek's cutoff is one of my favourite films of the '10s for sure.
wendy & lucy is on my favourite films of all time list.

tigers are not afraid by issa lopez was my favourite film of last year.

holiday from isabella eklof was in my 2019 top 10 for sure.

anna biller's the love witch is another favourite. i also like her earlier film viva quite a bit.

catherine breillat's made a handful of slightly nasty, transgressive films that i mostly haven't been able to track down yet. fat girl is one that i have, and that's really great.

julia leigh's sleeping beauty is one of my favourite films about sex that is not the least bit sexy.

josephine decker's madeline's madeline is one of my favourite films of the last few years.

clio barnard's 'the arbor' is one of my favourite docs.

julia ducournau's raw is one of the best horror films of the past few years imo.

sara smith's 'the midnight swim' is a great weird not quite horror, really odd, sort of spacey film that is a bit of a hidden gem.

andrea arnold's fish tank is one of the best films of the century i reckon.

I haven't seen meek's cutoff or wendy & lucy yet. I will likely get around to them eventually. I have seen River of Grass and Certain Women by reichardt. I liked tigers are not afraid, rating it an 8/10. Holiday looks interesting. I liked the love witch and Viva too. I loved Fat Girl, but haven't seen any of her other films. Haven't seen sleeping beauty, madeline's madeline, the arbor, raw or midnight swim, but I might eventually check them out. I agree fish tank was excellent. I have it on Criterion blu ray.
