Why is nobody talking about The Irishman (2019)?

It’s gonna be the movie of the year

reply

Maybe there will be more chatter about it once people have had a chance to see the thing?

reply

I am looking forward to it.

reply

a better question is why did it cost 200mil to produce

reply

A lot of it was on the CG for de-aging them. I trust Scorsese.

reply

Jim Norton as Don Rickles...I'll see it for that alone

Netflix Struggles to Come to Terms With Theater Chains Over ‘The Irishman’ Release

https://observer.com/2019/08/netflix-struggles-to-come-to-terms-with-theater-chains-over-the-irishman-release/

reply

I don't see how they can cave to the exhibitors -- but that production budget sure makes it interesting.

reply

Three weeks in the theaters like Roma should be enough.

reply

Enough for what?

reply

Last year, Roma received an exclusive three-week theatrical run before being made available to Netflix subscribers online.

reply

yes, I know. But Roma had a production budget of only $15mil.

It's easy to stand pat with a low budget movie -- but The Irishman needs to bring in more in some manner to be worth it. More subscribers or a longer/wider theatrical run. At 3 months they lose the new subscriber draw, and deviate from their model/brand -- but 3 weeks of a limited release won't rack up enough receipts against a giant budget. $200mil is a high cost for a prestige film.

reply

Netflix and other streaming services need to get together and start their own movie theater chain in order to avoid these issues.

reply

You have to wonder if they are starting to regret the money they spent on this.

reply

It's going to be an interesting test case.

reply

‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ is closing on $200M. I don't see The Irishman having the same appeal.

reply

You think Scorsese is past his prime or that there’s less of an audience for that type of movie?

reply

Less of an audience I would think. I will be watching it.

reply

Why do you suppose that is? Are people less cultured and in touch with the art of film or is that genre/style of filmmaking no longer relevant?

reply

Those older movies were never box office hits. Only when he partnered with DiCaprio did he score in that regard.

reply

Oh ok, is that why he did that?

reply

I think DiCaprio became interested in working with him.

Gangs of New York didn't get off the ground until Leo signed on. It was his star power that got the financing for that one and all the others they did together.

reply

That's the thing, his mob pics are not the box office winners people think they are. They get critical acclaim then become classics later on, but only The Departed did well at the box office (b/c of the younger star cast). His movies don't really tick all the demo boxes for financial success. I can't see the younger crowd getting amped for The Irishman.

reply

I always thought Goodfellas and Casino were major blockbusters or at least big hits and hugely popular, no?

reply

No, not at all.

I think Goodfellas actually lost money during its theatrical run while Casino broke even or something close to it.

reply

So they weren’t even popular when they came out?

reply

Popular? No. Critical acclaim? Yes.

They don't tick off the demos that make for big box office.

No kids, not many women, mostly older males, go.

See for yourself what raked in 1990:

Goodfellas finished at 26th -- behind a Steven Segal movie and Look Who's Talking Too

‘The Irishman’ to Get Theatrical Release One Month Ahead of Thanksgiving Netflix Premiere

https://www.thewrap.com/martin-scorseses-the-irishman-to-get-theatrical-release-one-month-ahead-of-thanksgiving-netflix-premiere/

reply

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I already watched that movie when it was called "Goodfellas".

Maybe people just don't care that much about Scorsese's 85th movie about the mob.

reply

there may be some truth to that.

reply

Yeah I am not that excited by the theme either. Not to mention DeNiro and Pacino will just be over acting as per usual. This time with another ham, Pesci.

reply

it's 3.5 hours long.
210 bloody minutes.

reply

Freaking hell. That's way too long. Even Goodfellas, which I think is a great film, could've been shorter.

reply

if scorcese can get netflix or any studio to pay $200m for him to produce a 3.5hr movie, then i suppose hats off to him.

but there's nothing in the world i like so much that i want to do it for 3.5 hours.
can i hereby order our great american directors to get their running times under control?
