Directors over 60 years old that should retire?

For me Michael Mann should just retire. I never want to see anything like blackhat ever again. He seems like an old man desperately trying to stay current but fails.

It's tempting to say Steven Spielberg and Woody Allen but you never know if one last great film is in the future.

reply

Yeah, but is it worth all the bad ones?

reply

Spielberg should definitely stop rather than continue to ruin his incredible legacy.

reply

Spielberg's last five movies:

Lincoln
Bridge of Spies
The BFG
The Post
Ready Player One

That's ruining his legacy?

reply

They're all right bordering on boring, but not what I expected from a Spielberg. THE Spielberg.

reply

I haven't seen BFG or the Post, but the other three were all very good, IMO.

reply

Still no Jaws, no E.T., no Indiana Jones nor Jurassic Park. His way of movie-making is still stuck in the 90s / early 2000s. The BFG or Ready Player One would've been mind blowing in the 90s, but not today. Now, it's meh.

His tricks are all old tricks. He used to be at the frontier of movie magic tech, now he's struggling with CGI shots. He's no longer evolving, no longer innovates. Should've stopped years ago and kept his legendary status intact.

reply

Don't tell others what they can't do, please.

reply

Ok.

reply

Spielberg should have retired 60 years ago

reply

Wow
I've never chatted with anyone that so strongly disliked Spielberg
What is it about his work that you don't like?
For the record I really enjoy Spielberg but I like hearing other opinions about everything

reply

Its not just that his movies stunk, but it changed Hollywood with jaws, when everyone tried to make blockbusters, instead of making movies.

Part of the reason I'd reply is that I can't understand for the life of me why he's even mentioned. Oh yeah, he's a good money-maker.

reply

Opinions naturally vary on films, I've loved a bunch of his directed and produced movies
As far as blockbuster summer pictures I'm guilty as hell of being in the crowd, totally submersed and watching lol

If he didn't make bank they wouldn't give him a camera, it is a business after all...
I do find that plenty of low budget thrillers and horrors (that's my sort of thing) are still made being constantly, without a big budget and no CGI, etc

I just feel like there is so much to put to film that there's room for everyone and I do enjoy Spielberg but still love my small indy gems too

reply

Can we lower to 55 and get rid of Tarantino and Linklater?

reply

Tarantino will quit at 60 anyway.

reply

I bet he wont hold to his claim.

But I'll adhere to your rules and offer Spike Lee for consideration.

[deleted]

I don't disagree but he has a new project *in development* with Iggy Pop!

There may yet be hope for Argento!

Fingers crossed Moose
I think Dario has one great one left in him

reply

[deleted]

I prefer Suspiria
Can we still be pals?

reply

[deleted]

Moose, I can't even explain the films I watch to my family and friends:/
My wife thinks I'm a loon and family friends are like 'he wont hurt you but he watches crazy shit on his TV'
They are lovely people but they just don't get it

Hey, screw it, we dig crazy movies👍
I'm all in

reply

I have not seen Sleepless but since you liked it I will keep a sharp lookout for it
You and I seem the only Italian/Giallo/horror fans here so Sleepless goes on my short list👍

reply

As long as their films are successful why shouldn't they just keep on making films?

reply

60 is nothing for a Director.
