Movies you find to be overrated and why?

Opinions are like buttholes: everyone has one and they all stink. Share some of your overrated films below! Here are some of mine...

RETURN OF THE KING - Ungodly long, has too many silly comedic moments, and the last hour or so is dedicated to wrapping up every single arc, including endings that are just stupid. I still enjoy this film, but it’s actually my least favorite of the full LOTR/Hobbit series.

GREMLINS - Not funny, not scary. One second the film is a G-rated family comedy, the next a borderline R-rated horror film. I dont mind a film being more lighthearted or more horrific, but pick one! It has incredibly stark tonal shifts that come off as confused. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to include a scene where a character explains how her father was killed pretending to be santa, complete with eerie music, a single take, and a slow camera zoom inon her face? Hilarious? Tremors is a film that balanced horror comedy infinitely better, yet Tremors will never get the same recognition or popularity of Gremlins.

TITANIC - Another ungodly long film. The whole idea of turning a tragic historical disaster into a cheesy and cliche fanfic romance is pretty insulting IMO. Billy Zane plays the most cartoony villain ever, in a film that doesnt even need a villain. All that’s missing a curly mustache and a tophat.

HALLOWEEN (1978) - The film has an exilerating first and third act, but it’s that pesky middle act the brings the film to a slog. How many times do we need to see Michael Myers creeping in the shadows? It’s scary the first 3 times, but after time 27 of him just standing there, you start to get a bit bored. Not to mention, the teen characters become very banal in this section of the film, and you wish it would just follow the infinitely more interesting Dr Loomis, but doesnt.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS - Despite excellent animation and design, this film is garbage. It features the most one demensional characters ever brought to the screen, made even worse by the lack of characterization in the script. Characters just feel and do certain things without any basic indication that they were feeling that way. Like when did Jack fall in love with Sally? Who knows! Suddenly he’s marrying her. The duckman should be the villain, but he’s suddenly cast out and replaced with the Boogeyman in the last 5 minutes of the movie, the the most pointless villain of all time. Not even the songs are that good, save maybe two. Most songs are just filler that stall the plot and add to the laughably short runtime. Pretty much everyone who I’ve told this opinion to has wanted to lynch me, and my post on TNBC board has been seen by everyone as a “sad attempt at trolling”. Sorry, you’re allowed to like it, but I think this movie sucks.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - Good movie, but certainly not the best Star Wars. Other than its ending I find it to be fairly underwhelming. Give me Ep 4 and 6 any day.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON - Not bad, but pretty cliche and paint-by-numbers, especially in its characters. How many times have we seen the dorky main character who’s an outcast and embarrassment because he wants to follow his dreams? How many times have we seen the hot love interest who slowly sees something deeper in the dorky protagonist? How many times have we seen the stoic dad who refuses to listen to his embarrassment child, only to learn the error of their ways in the third act? The film also follows a very basic plot structure that makes it all too predictable. It even has the “liar revealed / big misunderstanding” cliche in the 2nd act! How many times have we seen that??? One single 3D flying scene doesnt make this one of the best animated films in history.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD - DDL’s acting is far too over the top and ridiculous for a character who’s supposedly restrained. Anderson’s direction is the most obnoxious and in your face it’s ever been, and the film is just boring imo.

Sorry for triggering. What’re some of yours?

THE COLOR PURPLE - It's been too long since I've seen it so I don't remember why, just thought at the time most overrated movie ever.

The Secret of NIMH.

The pacing is terrible and several story elements are never solved including the whole plot with the rats electricity plan which was never even given a proper explanation. Besides the sickness none of the threats are really taken care of including the cat which for all we know ate them the second after the movie finished. When it wraps up i don't feel the characters are much safer than at the start. This was Bluth's first major movie and he was finding his way so he is excused in my eyes but i can't understand people deeming this his masterpiece when his other movies are so much more fantastic like An American Tail and The Land Before Time. This one really only has the animation to brag about, and even that is surpassed by his later ones. I respect the ambition behind it but when it comes down to it i can't say it is that great.

Not triggered so no need to apologize
Citizen Kane was a snooze-fest
A well off guy getting all grumpy about a childhood memory..?

Total waste of time though some of the camera work was excellent

Funny!
I love Scarface and find it way more enjoyable than Citizen Kane but I would have done the same thing...a gig is a gig👍

At least the liquor store worked out for you, I find that a good liquor store (or two!) that your'e a welcomed regular of is a sign of a high standard of living

You want to elaborate a bit on Empire? Not triggered but curious.

reply

Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy Empire. If you turned it on the Tv, I’d probably watch it til the credits. My issue is that I simply don’t see what makes it better than Episode 4, or one the best sequels of all time. I don’t think any of the action scenes top that of 4 or 6, and the endings of 4 and 6 are far more exciting than 5, etc. Boba Fett isnt THAT awesome, he’s just a standard threatening villain with a gravely voice. Vader’s twist isnt THAT shocking. The ending isnt THAT sad. I dont know, everything feels half satisfying to me. It’s a good 7/10 movie, but 4 and 6 are much better 9/10 films IMO.

Also, the line “I love you” “I know” is cringe. Not sure why people love it. Such a douchey line.

reply

That line is meant to be douchey though, the original line was going to be "I love you too" but Harrison thought "I know" would fit Han's cocky personality better.

reply

EMPIRE?? I'm definitely triggered. Where is my therapy puppy?

reply

Titanic I agree with.

reply

That Billy Zane character was really awful and not needed
Lousy script

I also hate the melodramatic fictional love story. If they'd wanted one, they could've used the real life and secret affair between Belgian cabaret singer Berthe Mayné and Canadian hockey player Quigg Baxter.

reply

You should have been a script doctor

reply

Yes, I believe I should be.

reply

Poor Quigg. They were both single what was the big deal.

reply

She was most likely a "lady of the night", while he was the son of a banker. You know how things were back then.

reply

I missed the cabaret singer part.

I think their story is a hell of a lot more interesting than Leo and Kate's boring "romance".

reply

[deleted]

Lol. Same here.

reply

I very much disagree with you on Halloween and The Empire Strikes Back.

The Dark Knight is ridiculously overrated.

reply

No, it's not. The Shawshank Redemption is overrated.

reply

The Dark Knight is great but not among cinema’s finest achievements like most people claim it be. It’s not even the best Batman.

reply

Yes, that one as well.

reply

schindler's list - i think spielberg's inherent sentimentality & sappiness undermines what ought to have been his finest hour. the climactic scene of neeson going 'this watch...' is the worst offending moment, but there are others.

son of saul is an example of a holocaust film done with gravity & seriousness, the best one i know of,
