Is The Sopranos really that good?

I don't think they wanted to portray realism. But it's entertaining enough.

I enjoyed especially being married to a Italian-Canadian.

Yep, it really is that good -- and I'm not the usual type of person who would be a fan of violent mobsters and their Underworld!

It's good because the whole production has amazingly high values. The pacing, the cinematography, the directing, the performances, the timing, the writing -- everything about each show creates a gem. Each episode is like a voyage into its own eerily paced independent film. The Sopranos is superb.

And what hooked me is it's not merely about mobsters and their violent acts and turf wars and kills, etc, though it's about those too. It's about psychological inner conflicts, family tensions and dynamics, moral dilemmas, tough choices, complicated relationship between people and family.

Yes, Yes it is. 10/10. Some episodes even go to Eleven.

One thing people don't seem to mention here is the humor in the Sopranos. Much of it is black humor, but some of the major characters are a bit dim and it's funny listening to them debate things. There is an early episode where a woman is verbally fighting with her husband and it gets really nasty. Then he ends up getting murdered while jogging and she ends up on television crying and saying what a wonderful guy he was. I mean, sure people can feel bad about this in retrospect, but I'm pretty sure it was meant to be funny.
